Are Dems still struggling to distinguish between invited / wanted / needed immigrants and illegals?

Ellis Island was created to usher in and vet immigrants this country desperately needed during its early formation...And yes, we were a nation of white European immigrants...Why the confusion? The U.S. was never suppose to be a nation of unwanted, uninvited, illegal immigrants...Why would anybody in their right mind want such a thing?
Further, for our past good deeds; we are not bound to some weird contract of sorts, we are not required to take in all immigrants.
Why do Mexicrats have such a hard time understanding this?
