It's true. Take a look at the poor in other countries. They don't have telephones and televisions, cable TV, food stamps, free medical care, free lunches for their children, sliding scale rates on their rents (or free rent) and their bills, amongst many other things. During the riots of the 60ties in my city, my dad used to be escorted to work by the National Guard. (he worked on the side of town where all the rioting took place.)

Well, you have a roundabout way of saying let them work or starve.

I am not poor, I bet I am within one percentile of the median income for a single man my age.

I have lots of assets, little cash.

That was a choice I made, I could have worked three years longer and collected a big lump sum and more a month.

No, as to the poor, having taught them for 25 years(23 of those in 95%+ free lunch schools), I am convinced poverty is a choice.

I saw too many born into real dirt poor rural poverty use an education(which is available for free), and ambition, to escape.

Most that have done well used the military or the teaching profession to get out, but, I have taught doctors, pharmacists, a race horse jockey, and countless oilfield workers who born on welfare, but swore their kids never would be.

That said, for every one of them, there were nine content to "chill" for life, at the taxpayers' expense.

There is the problem.

There is no market for unskilled labor with no work ethic.

Minimum wage is so high, most goes to middle class kids who know how to get to work on time.

Your untrained, unskilled kid today has little chance of getting that first job, or keeping it if he does.

The thing to do, and it is so classically leftist, is to open re-education camps, similar to FDR's programs, and offer remedial education and an opportunity to earn a wage.

Taking it a bit further to the left, and what I would do, if in charge, would be to guarantee a job to every able bodied American.

As long as there is trash to pick up, and streets to be fixed, the government could employ everyone.

Those who refuse to be trained, or to take an unskilled job, would be left to their own devices, and, most likely face severe punishment in the judicial system.
