Science didn't fail, capitalism did. Big pharma by and large got out of infectious diseases research to cash in on "me too" drugs, patenting various "off target" usage of drugs already on the market, and pushing/tweaking various erection drugs. Chasing easy quick money versus unmet medical need. The warnings have been out there for some time, merely ignored to suck off Wall Street.

Neither one failed, it was the drastic over usage of antibiotics since it was discovered. The blame for that lies completely in the laps of physicians and patients, patients because they began demanding antibiotics for every little scratch, every little sniffle and sneeze, physicians because they acquiesced to those demands. Then we have big agra who also is to blame for feeding livestock antibiotics for decades, that was in response for people's demand for healthier foods. Now a days physicians won't even prescribe it unless they absolutely have to but it's probably already too late.
