Anti-science advocates are freaking out about Google truth rankings

The right can't win by giving up on education and being anti-science. The left has a huge advantage as long as they control our educational system.

It doesn't have to be factories of left wing thought but the right has seceded this to the left for some strange reason. Colleges could teach the values of the family and morality with science, tech, etc. We'd be a better society if we did...and more people would vote republican.

There was a time when both parties would support investment and science. Not anymore.
Sorry dude, part of what makes right winger conservatives a right wing conservative is the whole anti education and anti science thing.

But that is the lie right there.
The right are very much for education and science. They have a different way of wanting to do it. Our Government should not be in education at all.
We were doing very well in rankings of the world until the Government got into it.
The type of Government we have is not set up for government controlled schools like other countries.
We went from number 3 to low 20's.
See how well the left have convinced you of this lie?
Depends on the school. And you are right, the right wing does have a different way of looking at science and education. They want to defund education and stop teaching real science.

Another lie.
Throwing more money at the educational system does not reform the way it should be taught.
Right now they are being taught what to think and not how to think.
Where did any say that science should not be taught? None
Nothing wrong with students and parents having the choice of both.

the dumb stuff is wanting a corporation decide for you what is dumb stuff and what is not
That's a stupid thing to say. First, Republicans believe corporations are the "job CREATORS" who bring high paying jobs, stability and happiness to unskilled workers who live in America. They think technology has some connection to magic.
The type of algorithm written to do this kind of search will probably compare results to mainstream scientific sites or data released by the bureau of labor statistics or some such place. Imagine wanting to know about Keystone and actually getting information on how long it is, how much it will cost per mile, how much oil it will spew when it leaks and not stupid nonsense like Fox saying it will create a MILLION jobs. Imagine getting the FACTS about vaccines and not right wingers claiming it causes autism or some other bullshit from ridiculous ignoramuses.
Right wingers will simply have to work harder to find the stupid stuff. Not that they use Google now. They don't have to when they are fed the ignorant pablum that oozes out from Fox and their own party leaders.

Imagine wondering how much it costs for Obama to take a vacation and not getting "Obama vacations cost $200,000,000.00 a DAY".
They don't have to when they are fed the ignorant pablum that oozes out from Fox and their own party leaders.

Google could launch an effort to keep trolls and bad information at bay, with a program that would rank websites according to veracity, and sort results according to those rankings. Currently, the search engine ranks pages according to popularity, which means that pages containing unsubstantiated celebrity gossip or conspiracy theories, for example, show up very high.

New Scientist’s Hal Hodson reports on the proposed Knowledge-Based Trust score:

The software works by tapping into the Knowledge Vault, the vast store of facts that Google has pulled off the internet. Facts the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings.

Anti-science advocates are freaking out about Google truth rankings - Salon.com

-------------------------------------

Imagine, ranking by FACTS instead of popularity.

So.... how exactly does it determine what the facts are? By determining who said it was fact? And how do we know who said it was fact, was not lying, or in error?

Do we just assume? Only Ph.D's determine truth? Has no Ph.D ever lied?

I'm confused on how that is supposed to work. Because most of what the debates are over, are not facts, but interpretation of the facts.

Usually (there are exceptions, especially on forums like this), but usually the debate isn't over the cost of the car. We can look up that the MSRP on a Chevy Volt is $34.3 Thousand. That is the fact.

That's not what we debate over. We end up debating over, is that price, a good price? A high price? A low price? And that "fact" that the price is lower or high, depends on expectations and perception, more than whether a Ph.D says it's a fantastic achievement.

It's an interesting idea. Personally, I think Google will likely continue to rank based on popularity, because what is popular, is what people are looking for when they google something. People are generally more interested in what the celebrity whores are doing, than anything educational.

Just a fact dude. Welcome to democracy. Those idiots watching Kim K's butt, are the same people who decide what idiot is in the white house. Love democracy, eh?

Oh please. Schools the right wingnuts call "failing" the rest of the world calls the best in the world and want to send their kids there.
In Texas, the fruitcake right wingers wanted to block teaching "critical thinking skills" because educated children are harder to control. They even spell it out in their state party platform. Do I have to post it again???? Are Republicans too stupid to read what comes from their leaders????
They also cut 5 billion from education.
In Wisconsin, Gov. Walker cut $300,000,000.00 from education. Course, he's a dropout so he probably feels it's a waste of money.
Question, after 150 years of conservative policies, why are Red States such over polluted financial disasters. It's OK. I don't expect a serious answer. Besides, it's so obvious.

CO2 is at about 400 parts per million in the atmosphere. That's a fact. Speculation as to what consequences that might have is, well, at best an educated guess.

So, the LA Times basically admitted that they will not print any story or letter to the editor that refutes climate change orthodoxy [my interpretation]. Los Angeles Times Op-Ed Letters Denying Climate Change Don t Get Published

So, yeah, the internet becoming the world according to Google is troubling. They were complicit in domestic surveillance until Snowden blew the whistle and forced them into damage control (feigned indignation).

As long as other search engines are available though, we should be okay.

I'm one of the few here that post links with nearly every thread I start. And the only times I don't post a link is because so many have already been posted. And even then, ignorant Republicans will say "I never read it". Like the Republicans threatening to block unemployment benefits for millions of Americans if Obama didn't extend the Bush Tax cuts. Or the Air Force making the worlds fastest super computer out of game chips. Republicans don't know much of value and worse, they don't want to know and worst of all, they take pride in not knowing. Everyone knows that. Even other Republicans.
