Man fatally shoots himself after eating 5 marijuana candies US Message Board - Political Discussion Forum

^ According to this post there have been other deaths reported previously ^

Here is one I find especially tragic since the people involved were only 19 and 23.
I thought the legal age was agreed to be 25 minimum to accommodate for brain development.
So what business did anyone have giving access to 20 year olds if it has been established this poses danger?

Pot Death: Teen Leaps 4 Stories After Eating Marijuana Cookie

A teenager in Colorado died after consuming an entire marijuana cookie that contained 6 servings of marijuana’s active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), according to a new report.

The 19-year-old man had received a marijuana cookie from his friend, a 23-year-old who bought the product from a store. The sales clerk instructed the friend to divide the cookie into six pieces, with each piece containing about 10 mg of THC, the recommended serving size established by Colorado authorities.

At first, the 19-year-old followed these instructions, and ate just part of the cookie. But after about 30 to 60 minutes, he didn’t feel any effects, so he ate the rest of the cookie, according to the report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Over the next few hours, the man showed erratic speech and hostile behaviors, the report said. About 2.5 hours after he ate the whole cookie, he jumped off a balcony on the fourth floor of his building, and died from trauma from the fall, the report said.

Officials determined that marijuana intoxication was the chief contributing factor to the man’s death, which occurred in March 2014. An autopsy found that the man’s blood levels of THC were above the legal limit for driving a car in Colorado.

“This case illustrates a potential danger associated with recreational edible marijuana use,” the report said. [Where Americans Smoke and Grow Marijuana (Maps)]

In 2012, Colorado legalized the recreational use of marijuana, and stores selling the products opened in 2014.

Marijuana takes longer to have an effect when ingested as opposed to smoked. Peak blood levels of THC occur about 1 to 2 hours after ingestion of marijuana, compared to just 5 to 10 minutes after the drug is smoked.

All the little potheads will be along to tell us how this had nothing to do with pot at all.

Is the death of another pothead really that bad?

I'm guessing that they'll try to ignore this thread.

Why blame weed for someone jumping off a building? Would you blame coffee if he had a cup before he committed suicide?

What is the total number of deaths caused by marijuana use over say the last 50 years, roughly?

While it is very unusual for marijuana to harm anyone regardless of how much is used, there are exceptions to every rule. Also, the above report contains no peripheral medical information or autopsy results concerning exactly what the cause of death was and what else this nineteen year-old might have been using at the same time.

Every day millions of people eat cookies, cakes, and candy which contain marijuana, some of whom assuredly exceed the recommended dosages. But along comes one highly questionable report of a related death and the Reefer Madness fanatics start raving.

Don't ignore the very real possibility of an obscure allergy being the real cause of this fellow's death There are people who become morbidly sick from one bee sting, others from eating peanuts, or food prepared with MSG (mono-sodium glutemate). Many of these exceptional individuals die if they don't receive immediate medical attention.

During the Reagan years it was common practice by NIDA (National Instutute on Drug Abuse) to release reports to the media on deaths of individuals who had used marijuana, implying that marijuana was the cause of death. NIDA continued to do this until it was learned that in every such example the individuals who reportedly were killed by marijuana did in fact use marijuana but actually died from some accompanying cause, such as heroin overdose, heart attack, ptomaine poisoning, et al -- causes which were ignored in the NIDA reports.

Golly... I sure appreciate the info. But I smoked my first joint in 1972. And smoked it on a daily basis for the better part of the next 30 years.

So, I've got a smidgen of experience on the subject.

Here's the thing... Potheads don't make great anything. Not the least of which are pharmacists... thus, somewhere between the growing of the weed and, the processing of the weed and, the extracting of the cannabinoids to mix into the respective Pot Goodies... there is a WILD Swing in the efficacy of those tasty mind-numbing snacks.

Add to that, the WILD distinctions in the thresholds of the individuals consuming them, the scene for the train-wreck described by the OP is set.

Ya see, back in the day, such treats were made by one of the group... everyone pretty much knew what was cool and what wasn't... If JJ ate a browny on Saturday morning and slept 'till Monday night, everyone knew to not hit more than a nibble of that batch to get THOROUGHLY TOASTED.

Today, with pot-head kids being imbeciles... when the head tells them it's a 6 way, they eat the whole fuckin' thing step out on the balcony, climb up on the rail, flaps their arms and FLIES LIKE A ... ROCK straight to the deck, four floors below.

Now, what's more, in all the years that I was druggin'... NEVER ONCE did I ever rationalize that because I liked to get high, that such should be legal. Because it's a bad idea.

What's more... people get prescribed all sorts of mind altering drugs and that doesn't mean that people should be able to walk into a headshop and pick up a handful of Vicodin.

'Cause that shit will kill ya... .

OK... that said... I readily cop to the fact that "BOOZE IS LEGAL!".

Nothin' I can do about that... it's a bad idea too. But its at least measured and distributed in such a way that potency is predictable. But still... booze will kill ya, too.

Give the kid a Darwin award. If he'd been on the ground, he could've eaten 50 of the cookies and woken up fine the next day.

Don't you think marijuana could be distributed in the same measured and controlled way as booze? If not, why not.

Like you, I used marijuana on a fairly regular basis throughout the '70s when it was decriminalized in New York City. So did most of my friends, most of whom were successful people, some of whom were professionals, none of whom manifested any of the negative stereotypes. The logical conclusion being one who might be thought of as a "pot-head" probably is by his innate disposition everything that term implies.

So if you think using marijuana was a "bad idea," maybe it was -- for you.

New York marijuana lab explosion kills firefighter
Mon, Oct 03, 2016 - An explosion that destroyed a New York City home and killed a firefighter has drawn attention to marijuana-making methods that are legal in many US states — but can also be lethal.
A New York fire battalion chief died responding to the blast on Tuesday in a Bronx home that authorities say had been converted into an indoor marijuana farm. They are investigating whether the alleged growers tampered with gas lines and mishandled other materials in ways that caused the explosion. Indoor marijuana farmers can create potential fire hazards by using natural gas, propane or butane to power carbon dioxide generators that make the plants grow. In recent years across the US, similar methods used to produce more potent marijuana extracts have resulted in explosions and other catastrophes.

Indoor gas use “is a standard way to grow marijuana,” said Michael O’Hare, a professor at the University of California in Berkeley who is an expert in cannabis cultivation. “If you raise the [carbon dioxide] level, it’ll grow faster.” Some growers rely on propane or butane gas because using large amounts of metered gas from a utility could draw the attention of authorities, who might question why so much fuel is needed for a house of a certain size, O’Hare said. In those conditions, a gas leak could spell disaster, he said.

Emergency personnel work at the scene of a house explosion in the Bronx borough of New York on Wednesday last week.

An hour before the explosion at about 7:30am on Tuesday in the Bronx, dozens of nearby residents said they could smell gas wafting over the neighborhood. The house had already been evacuated and fire personnel were on the scene when the blast sent debris flying, killing Chief Michael Fahy, a 17-year fire department veteran and father of three. His funeral was held on Saturday. Two suspects, Garivaldi Castillo and Julio Salcedo, were arrested and are being held on drug charges while authorities try to determine whether there is evidence that could result in more serious counts related to Fahy’s death.

Prosecutors said in court this week that the two-story Bronx property was full of combustible items related to the pot operation, including grow lamps and vats of liquid fertilizer. Windows were sealed and other areas covered with extra insulation to retain heat. Plants the size of “small trees” were growing in bedrooms on the upper floor. A lawyer for the 32-year-old Castillo has questioned his connections to the house. Castillo has pleaded not guilty. Salcedo, 34, was arraigned late on Friday, pleaded not guilty and was being held without bail. Firefighters packed the courthouse where Salcedo was arraigned. Earlier, as he walked into a Bronx precinct, some firefighters told him to “burn in hell,” the New York Daily News reported.

Moderation is the key to happiness....have a good day...
There are no PSA's imploring moderation with pot. No PSA's warning of the potential lifelong consequences of pot. As a result, you get this story.
There will be more stories of anxiety and depression issues but likely obfuscated by the pot lobby.
And then consider the pot Nazis who, out of ignorance and arrogance, inject their THC randomly into the systems of people nearby. That will unfortunately increase, too.

How would one use a syringe to inject folks with pot smoke?

You are comparing a Cup of coffee to a cookie laced with marijuana and telling us the latter had no more affect on his behavior than the coffee? What's the point of marijuana to you? Does Smoking it provides the enjoyment of smooth, rich flavo or what?

So an underaged kid gets his hands on a pot cookie, take 6x the recommended dose, and kills himself. Now we should ban pot because of this extremely isolated event (which depends largely on the stupidity of a 19 year old).
