Anonymous hacker gets 10 years

"it's also significantly more than the average prison time serves for murder, which is less than six years. "

"That's not what Hammond did, though. Hammond helped break into Stratfor's network and stole as much as 200 gigabytes of data, including email messages and credit card numbers. Some of that information was later released by WikiLeaks as the Global Intelligence Files, and the hackers reportedly used the credit cards to donate millions to charity, though that was never confirmed."

"In fact, he told The Guardian that would've happened if it hadn't been for Hector Xavier Monsegur (a.k.a. Sabu), who was working as an FBI informant at the time and gave Hammond the orders to do the hack."

Isn't that entrapment?

Seems like the US govt is finding another person to put in prison for a long time to stop them showing people what's what.

Just like this guy.

Stealing credit card info is making my life better? People think that because this stuff happens online or on paper, that it somehow is not as bad as climbing into someone's car and driving it off to a chop shop.

This guy was sentenced in accordance with the law. He will not serve ten years, though.

An informant asked him to do it? Isn't that a serious lack of authority to ask someone to break the law?

I didn't say this guy in particular was making your life better. However some hackers are doing things that are keeping govts from basically doing what they like, they know they can't hide things electronically and get away with it.

Now, he stole info that the company should have protected, but didn't.

However, did the guy harm anyone?

Also, he was set up by the federal govt, that's illegal, isn't it? Entrapment.

Another real American hero gets rewarded for shining a light on how we are at the mercy of the intel apparatus and how state espionage and industrial espionage is one big club. We are so screwed that people like this get jailed to protect big brother.
