The problem is that most people really dont' care about discussion - at least from what I've observed. Many have already made up their minds before the facts (I mean FACTS) were presented to them ... and they don't seem like they want to learn the facts, they just want to scream at the top of their lungs: "Socialist!" or "Anti-Obama!" I've been trying to stay out of the conversation because it seems just a big cluster-fuck by now and the truth also is... I don't have a stake in it, I don't live in the USA anymore. I just wish I could find more facts and less bullshit - especially the ideological partisan kind (which is the least helpful).

I've made a few threads with actual language from the bill as the OP to start a discussion. And like you just said it devolves quickly into an uniformed talking point war.

I try...and i try hard to stay cool with people when i disagree....i do fall off that wagon on occasion and throw an insult out, but i usually try to backpeddle after so we can move forward with an actually discussion.

It was cool in one thread i found out part of the bill that I thought said the govt will have eletronic access to your bank account was not actually doing that.

I actually learned something besides insults talking about healthcare online

I see that too, it is entertaining in short bursts but when its constant it destroys debate

There's talk of supply side economics, which is primarily a republican school of thought, where if you keep demand the same and increase the supply by the increasing suppliers price would go down. The problem is on a national scale that is impossible because as you increase the ammount of companies the market share, which dictates demand, decreases. There are overhead costs, things you're going to pay no matter how many products you make, so cost per item increases the less you make. This would drive up prices.

In some situations increasing the ammount of suppliers would decrease price, but they special cases.

I read Ann's article; take away the biting references, it is spot on. I guess that's why so many on the left despise her. Yet she really isn't any different from Chris Mathews or Olbermann and other left-wing mouthpieces when it comes to her biting vitriole, except that she does back up her positions with well thought out arguments rather than just calling people "mean" or "racists" and refering to tingly body parts.

I actually feel as if this congress' leaders and the president have ridiculed and bad mouth me for speaking out against hr 3200.

I am still angry at obama for what he said a few weeks ago about people who are speaking out in opposition to the proposed HR 3200 "Stop talking and get out of the way"

I know when he said that he was referring to republican congresspeople but those who are opposed to it are partially representing my views on the matter...so telling them to shut up is akin to telling me to shut up.

When nancy pelosi calls me "Astroturf" for showing up at a meeting and asking questions about segments of the health care bill (not shouting but asking repsectfully, and i got answered that way too) i take it personal.

Those are the 2 worst examples but there are many examples from the little politicians out there too, those 2 are the big head honchos right now though.

Sorry, for the delay. Doing some research and I will agree with you that I think Pelosi's (especially) verbiage has been from a higher-ranking person and more harsh than previous protester slurs that I've found. Bohner (and some others who don't rank as high) said anti- Iraq war protesters were in league with terrorists and various other pundits (but NOT elected officials) have been very harsh in labeling dissenters as communists and terrorists and the like.

So in terms of where the barbs are coming from, I acknowledge your very good points.

But I think it is a matter of degree. I've heard BOTH sides say some very irresponsible things. But I'll agree that I find Pelosi as disagreeable as any I have found.

But I also think it is disengenious to try to say a very notable and extreme example contrary to your contention is "off limits."
