China 'seizes US vessel' in S China Sea - BBC News
The Chinese have seized us government property in the south China Sea. It was a research vessel launched by an unarmed us research ship.
For those unfamiliar with the south China Sea situation, here is an image of the absurd Chinese claims to the region
They've been artificially constructing islands to help further their absurd claims, building military installations which they had previously promised not to do.
They've recently conducted a live fire exercise, a first involving their light aircraft carrier the liaoning, in the Taiwan straights. Taiwan Is an free and independent democracy claimed by the Chinese as a renegade province. It''s where their U.S. backes enemies fled at the beginning if the cold war.
They have claimed any attempt at independence for Taiwan or recognition of taiwanese independence by the US would result in an immediate invasion. So this might be directly related to President Trump's call for being tough on China.
If Trump puts sanctions on China, potentially a trillion dollars worth of US factories and milions of jobs would return to the US. Which would crush the Chinese economy that lacks a consumer base and relies on its plentiful and cheap labour to sustain its massive manufacturing economy. Not to mention that protocol breaking phone call from the taiwanese president to Trump, that upended 40 years of U.S. diplomacy.
Will this mean future provocative actions by the chinese? Will it alter trump's calculation or exacerbate the situation? How will current President Obama respond or future President Trump? Will it be war in the south China Sea?
