American Dentist Identified As Killer Of Famed Lion In Zimbabwe

Are you a registered dumbass or just a freelancer? Are you saying it wasn't illegal to bait Cecil from a protected park over to private land before silently shooting him with a bow? And if it was legal as you claim - why have two guides been arrested? Why do they want to extradite the dentist?

Okay, Shitting Bull- Baiting isn't illegal. Shooting him from a blind isn't illegal.

What appears to be illegal is that game preserve didn't have a lion quota. Which normally isn't a problem, if you kill a lion, you just drag him over to a neighboring preserve that DOES have a Lion quota, which is what they normally do in Zimbabwe because they really, really like the fact that guys like Doctor Palmer are willing to drop $55,000 into their economy.

So normally, these Zimbabwean officials would be just fine with this, if you didn't have a bunch of stupid-ass tree-hugging hippies making a big deal over THIS lion they had probably never heard of before last week.

The reality is, big game hunting is GOOD for these animals. Because the communists have fucked up Zimbabwe's economy so badly if you didn't have big game hunting, you'd have a bunch of poor people clear cutting the land to engage in subsistence farming.

that will drive the African Lion to extinction a lot faster than a few dozen taken as trophies every year.

You are so full of shit. When you're wrong - you're wrong. It's that simple...
Ah. Another one liner from 'Chef Stupid'.
I never guided any 'trophy hunters'. They disgust me.
I guided 'meat hunters' who are an important part of a balanced conservation system.
Herd culling and the money generated helps ensure healthy numbers of big game animals.

You know what is weird is how that dentist in Minnesota was just thinking he was going on vacation.

Doing what he loved to do....

Fast forward the entire world is blasting him and saying "what the hell were you thinking?"

Not the whole world. Just the busy bodies who have nothing to do but mind other people's business.

God Damn the dude could of saved himself a plane ticket and just gone to the local zoo and killed a lion there.

Its the same thing what he did.

Seriously dude you are defending him? A bait hunt is so wrong on so many levels

Male lions are the ultimate misogynists. They have the females do the work and the kill, and then they eat first...after lounging around and watching the action of the chase. If they had opposable thumbs, they would have remote controls with rewind capabilities.

They also kill all the cubs sired by other male lions. It is just natural for them to do these things.

What do you want him to strip naked and run through the jungle after that lion bare handed?

I think many would say not naked and after the lion, but naked and we'll release the lions. We'll be fair, and give him a head start.

He violated the Lacey Act for the second time. Last time, he got probation so maybe the Feds will give him jail time. Doubt it though.

The alpha male will kill his defeated rivals offspring so his own will have a better chance of survival. That's nature. They also are handy to have around when the tribe is threatened. Very few creatures will take on an adult male. I've seen video of a single one demolishing a herd of jackals.

Fuck you, you uppity little prick.

It is believed the lion was baited to tempt him out of the Hwange National Park, a technique commonly used by hunters so they can "legally" kill protected lions.

I'm sure it was, Shitting Bull. But that isn't illegal.

Again, you dogmaticc liberals need to look up "Law of Unintended Consequences".

Cecil was baited at night with a dead animal tied to a car and lured away from the park, then shot with a bow and arrow. He was reportedly found about 40 hours later by trackers and was shot with a gun, beheaded and skinned.

Dentist Walter Palmer may also be guilty of more crimes than poaching.

Freyfogle added that Palmer's alleged conduct could subject him to a number of other federal and state criminal provisions, among them animal cruelty laws and the Lacey Act, which "makes it a federal crime to 'purchase in interstate or foreign commerce' any wildlife taken in violation of any foreign law."

Slate points out that Palmer might also have violated U.S. anti-bribery laws.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement on Wednesday that the agency "is deeply concerned about the recent killing of Cecil the lion. We are currently gathering facts about the issue and will assist Zimbabwe officials in whatever manner requested."

For his part, Palmer -- who was fined $3,000 and given a year of probation after pleading guilty to illegally killing a black bear outside a permitted zone in 2006 -- said in a statement on Tuesday that he "had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite."

You're aware the translation of "Sioux" is "snake" or "serpent", right?

Meanwhile, in other news in regard to this media hoax, the news articles are now contradicting each other.

Except I'm not wrong.

It's not illegal to bait and it's not illegal to shoot from a blind, as several posters have already explained to you.

the only illegality is that they didn't have a quota for lions, but the dentist had no way of knowing that.
Where is it legal to lure an animal off a preserve to kill it?

is it legal shoot him with a bow and arrow then leave him to suffer and die the next day...?

During the hunt – which the organisers later admitted was badly carried out – it was alleged that Cecil was lured at night about half a mile out of the national park using bait, and then shot with a bow and arrow. The next day he was found wounded by the hunters and killed, before being beheaded and skinned.

Animals cannot be killed within the confines of the park. The hunters then removed his collar – further contravening park rules.

Most States outlaw baiting.

  • No person shall discharge any firearm, bow and arrow, crossbow or other similar device, upon, over or across any public roadway. Hunting is prohibited in highway or interstate medians and rights of way.
  • No person shall take or attempt to take wildlife, protected or unprotected, from an automobile, or other vehicle, except as prescribed by regulation. Hunting from boats is permitted for small game and furbearers.
  • A person shall not pursue, chase or take a deer, elk, or turkey (during the spring turkey season): with the aid of dogs; while on horseback; or when a deer, elk or bear is swimming. Dogs may be used to locate and flush turkeys during the fall turkey seasons only.
  • It is illegal to feed bears directly or indirectly for any reason.
  • No person shall take wildlife with the aid of fire, smoke, explosives or gas.
  • Baiting is prohibited on all WMAs, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Daniel Boone National Forest, Jefferson National Forest, Land Between the Lakes and state parks open to hunting.
  • Deer and elk hunters shall not use electronic decoys or calls.
  • No person shall take a turkey when the turkey is roosting. A roost is the place where a turkey spends the night.
  • A person hunting wild turkeys shall not use live turkeys as decoys.
  • Wild turkey or bears shall not be hunted by the aid of bait, nor shall areas be hunted where bait is present. This includes private lands baited for deer. An area is considered baited for 30 days after all bait has been removed. A baited area is any place where feed, grains or other substances capable of luring wild turkeys or bears have been placed. An area where grains or other feeds exist as the result of legitimate agricultural practices, or as the result of growing or manipulating a crop for wildlife management, is legal for hunting.
