All Americans should fear what happens next

Two authors, both non partisans, surprised themselves by describing a case FOR partisanship. Do you agree?

“We have both spent our professional careers strenuously avoiding partisanship in our writing and thinking. We have both done work that is, in different ways, ideologically eclectic, and that has—over a long period of time—cast us as not merely nonpartisans but antipartisans.

“Temperamentally, we agree with the late Christopher Hitchens: Partisanship makes you stupid. We are the kind of voters who political scientists say barely exist—true independents who scour candidates’ records in order to base our votes on individual merit, not party brand.

“This, then, is the article we thought we would never write: a frank statement that a certain form of partisanship is now a moral necessity. The Republican Party, as an institution, has become a danger to the rule of law and the integrity of our democracy. “

I'll determine whether they are "non-partisan." I guarantee you that they are highly partisan.

Trump invited foreign interference in our Presidential election again -- the first time was in 2016. Trump tried to bribe a foreign leader. Trump completely ignored Congress during the impeachment process in the House and in his Senate trial. Trump was declared innocent of all charges by the Republican Senate.

What happens if Trump is elected to another four years in office without the concerns of reelection which dominated his persona since Jan. 21, 2017 the first time?

Senator Susan Collins is clueless. Following a speech on the Senate floor in which she announced she’ll vote to acquit, Collins told Norah O’Donnell of CBS that she believes Trump “has learned from this case” and “will be much more cautious in the future.”

Getting impeached “is a pretty big lesson,” Collins said — the implication being that Trump will be chastened going forward.

I am not at all sure which planet Collins is from or how she got elected the Senator from Maine, but she definitely is not talking about our Trump. Trump never feels chastened and he never apologizes. It is simply not in his DNA.

Want proof? On Tuesday, February 4, Trump gave his State of the Union address in the halls of Congress. His impressive audience included the members of the House of Representatives, the members of the Senate, members of the Supreme Court, and chosen representatives of the Defense Department, State Department, and other agencies of our federal government.

Before this august body and even before the Trump Republican controlled Senate allowed Trump to get off scot free from his crimes, the most divisive President in modern American history presented the Medal of Freedom to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh -- one of the most polarizing figures on the political landscape today. Limbaugh has insisted it was unfair to blame white Americans for slavery, blamed gay marriage for the decline of Christianity, and called a woman a slut for seeking coverage for contraception.

Senator Collins, does Trump seem suitably chastened to you? Trump has said there are no lessons to be learned.

Trump would be unleashed.

For four more years Trump would be the most powerful man on the planet. Already he ignores the American people. Answering only to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and "Fox and Friends," he cancelled regular press conferences and is scared to death of the White House press corps. Trump refuses to answer to the American people and now we can add Congress to the list. He will simply ignore what our representatives do and say, and he has hijacked the power of the purse, all due to a complicit Senate led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

He will rule with complete impunity for four more years (or more). That is the power the Senate gave him, and why? Because they are afraid of Trump's base.

The irony is, the GOP has already lost several key elections in 2018 and 2019 because of Trump, including control of the House.

The irony is, his base will not like what will happen. They don't want it to happen.

But they enabled it! The real Pandora's Box. Be careful what you wish for!

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell presents his closing arguments in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald John Trump

What a stirring speech. He talked about the grave responsibility of the Senate. He went back to the early history of our country and told us all about the Framers and their concerns.

"They wanted impeachment trials to be fair to both sides. They wanted them to be timely, avoiding the 'procrastinated determination of the charges.' They wanted us to take a deep breath and decide which outcome would reflect the facts, protect our institutions, and advance the common good," McConnell said.

That nearly brought me to tears.

He talked about the Democrats. "The drive to impeach President Trump did not begin with the allegations before us. Here was reporting in April of 2016: 'Donald Trump isn’t even the Republican nominee yet… [but] ‘Impeachment’ is already on the lips of pundits, newspaper editorials, constitutional scholars, and even a few members of Congress." What did that have to do with anything?

He talked about the Mueller investigation and the 2016 election. "Here’s their real position: Democrats think President Donald Trump committed a 'High Crime or Misdemeanor' the moment he defeated Secretary Clinton in the 2016 election. That is the original sin of this presidency: That he won and they lost." That one nearly brought tears, too, tears of laughter. Hard to believe this guy is a Senator. This is his summation for a Senate impeachment trial?

And, of course, he dealt with his perceived shortcomings of the House. "We have watched a major American political party adopt the following absurd proposition: We think this president is a bull in a china shop, so we’re going to drive a bulldozer through the china shop to get rid of him. This fever led to the most rushed, least fair, and least thorough presidential impeachment inquiry in American history."

McConnell talked about everything in his summation except what Trump did, except the considerable evidence against Trump, except Trump's self-incriminating statements, and he offered no explanation why his party would not allow witnesses and documents in his trial.

In other words, McConnell talked about everything except the Senate impeachment trial itself.

It doesn't appear to have worked on you. Probably too much traffic.

When you have a cult of personality that is barely literate and will do anything their authoritarian god tells them to, you are one step away from Fascism.

The Swastika is making a comeback, and Trump's loyal brownshirts have so browbeaten the GOP that only Mitt Romney stood for the rule of law.

What a disgraceful day in our history.

The only disgraceful day was when the commies impeached Trump with no laws broken and no impeachable offenses. Their impeachment war will last at least the rest of our lives, and maybe longer. When we are in charge of the House and impeach your next commie President, I don't want to hear any of you leftists complain. You started this war, and payback is a bitch.

What if Trump is impeached a second time for new 'high crimes and misdemeanors'?

The GOP has given Trump a hall pass and he is unzipped.

Trump has carte Blanche now. The Democrats are the party who cried wolf.

No, Democrats cried pig.

I would agree this was a disgrace, but not for the reasons you think. First, Trump is an ass. However, everyone running against him is also an ass. So the question left to us is just who is the biggest ass, and is that enormous ass intolerable?

But let’s take a moment and consider the arguments made by Trump. He showed Contempt of Congress. Yet they did not subpoena him, nor challenge the inevitable Executive Privilege claim in court. They didn’t have time for that, or something. So this is how it went down. The Democrats demanded that Witnesses and Documents be voluntarily provided for the “investigation” and Prosecution. Yeah. That’s going to happen. I want you to take anything that shows you have ever committed a crime, including speeding or failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign to the Police. If you don’t then you are in contempt. Idiocy.

The Democrats could have made the case but it would have taken time to work its way through the courts. Instead, they were totally in synch with the Twitter Generation, by refusing to take more than thirty seconds to actually think about the shit.

But wait, there is more. Apparently if you now avail yourself of a Lawyer, or use any of the Civil Rights that have been fought for you are guilty. Because only guilty people do that. House Dem closing argument: Only guilty people assert their rights and insist on judicial review, or something

Really? I mean, really? That is the argument that the Democrats are making? The same flawed unconstitutional argument that the Right Wing made about Stop and Frisk? If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear? That is the literal not figurative, literal definition of an authoritarian society. Those dictatorships we are constantly warned will come about if a Republican is elected to the City Council.

Yeah. Trump is an ass. The problem is that everyone on the other side is an ass too. It is not the fault of the public because they did not get excited about the Premature Ejaculation that we were forced to witness. If you want to be a Prosecutor, you have to do it the right way.

And the rest, is just bullshit.
