Who can say, what their motivation was. Maybe, they need a save base in the face of the approaching ISIS. I don´t know. Their assault was unsuccessful, anyway. If they thought, the Syrian resistance is "easier" than ISIS, they are now disabused.

"On Monday morning, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – in coordination with Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham – carried a brutal assault on the provincial capital of the Aleppo Governorate, killing 31 civilians (including 12 children) and wounding 184 others after they launched over 300 mortar shells and rockets into the Al-Rashideen, Al-Ashrafiyeh, and Al-Ramouseh Districts.

Following their barrage of mortars and rockets, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra, Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen, and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham stormed the northern neighborhoods of the Al-Ashrafiyeh and Al-Rashideen Districts, where they encountered fierce resistance from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) before they quickly advanced past their frontline defenses at the aforementioned areas in Aleppo City.

However, the Islamist combatants would not hold onto this success for very long, as a large convoy of reinforcements from the predominately Palestinian “Jerusalem Brigades” (Liwaa Al-Quds) and the Al-Ba’ath Battalions poured into the provincial capital’s northern and western sectors; this resulted in a powerful counter-assault on the Islamist militants that led to their eventual withdrawal from the Al-Ashrafiyeh District.

According to a military source in the Aleppo Governorate, the firefights lasted for a little over ten hours before the violence subsided and the Al-Qaeda affiliates withdrew their fighters; this assault was costly for the Islamist militants, as they lost over 40 of their combatants during their attempt to advance their positions in the provincial capital.

The source further added that the SAA’s Central Command reported 9 casualties from the SAA, 13 casualties from the NDF, and 2 casualties from the Jerusalem Brigades – the number of soldiers wounded-in-action (WIA) could not be verified by Al-Masdar News."

Al-Qaeda Throws Everything They Have at Aleppo City

"Continuing where they left off on Monday, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – in coordination with their allies from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Free Syrian Army (FSA), and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen – resumed their brutal assault on the provincial capital of the Aleppo Governorate, where they launched another series of attacks on the Syrian Armed Forces’ defensive positions around this historical city on Monday morning.

Following their failed entry into the Al-Rashideen District on Monday, Jabhat Al-Nusra and their allies launched over 80 mortars and rockets in the direction of civilian neighborhoods (3 civilians killed) before they would conduct another assault at this imperative area in western Aleppo, capturing seven building blocks from the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigades) after a number of clashes immersed this area .

According to a National Defense Forces source in Aleppo City, the Al-Qaeda group and their allies sent wave after wave of armed combatants to overwhelm the Liwaa Al-Quds and NDF fighters entrenched near the Al-Rashideen District; this eventually resulted in their subsequent withdrawal from the western sector of the district.

The source further added that the Syrian Armed Forces suffered 11 casualties during the intense clashes with Jabhat Al-Nusra; however, he was unable to provide the exact number of Islamist fighters killed, but he did specify the number was estimated around 35 enemy combatants.

Despite numerous claims by Jabhat Al-Nusra social media activists in regards to their militants entering the Al-Khalidiyah Quarter of Aleppo City, sources from the Syrian Armed Forces have confirmed that this was in fact fabricated; the militant groups attempted to breach the Syrian Armed Forces’ frontline defenses, but were repelled before they could advance into the area.

North of Aleppo City, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra – in coordination with Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Jund Al-Aqsa – attacked the town of Bashkoy from their positions at Rityan, resulting in their infiltration into this area – clashes are reportedly ongoing between Nusra and the NDF at the western sector of the town."

Syrian Armed Forces Frustrates Jabhat Al-Nusra in West Aleppo

"Day four of the Jabhat Al-Nusra’s (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) offensive in western Aleppo did not yield much success for the militant group, as the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigade) – thwarted all of the Al-Qaeda contingent’s infiltration attempts into the Al-Rashideen District on Thursday.

The Jabhat Al-Nusra assault on day three began during the wee hours on Thursday, when a large contingent of militants conducted an attack on the Syrian Armed Forces’ defensive positions at the eastern sector of the Al-Rashideen District; this attack was repelled after almost six hours of non-stop fighting that resulted in the death of over 20 armed combatants from Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen.

In addition to their assault on the Al-Rashideen District, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra – in coordination with Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen – launched another assault on the Syrian Arab Army’s positions at the Great Prophet Mosque and the dilapidated Air Force Intelligence Building in the Al-Zahra Association Quarter; however, this attack failed once again, as the Syrian Armed Forces drove back the enemy combatants before nightfall on Thursday.

According to a military source in the Aleppo Governorate, the Syrian Armed Forces have secured almost every point in the New Aleppo District; however, they still face heavy resistance at the Al-Rashideen District, where the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen have entrenched themselves in a number of buildings at the western sector.

The source further added that the number of gas canisters and rockets fired into the city of Aleppo has dissipated since Monday, when they fired over 250 rockets and mortar shells into the provincial capital’s northern districts."

Syrian Army Recovers Lost Territory in North Aleppo

"This week started off rough for the Syrian Armed Forces, as the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – in coordination with their allies from Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham – launched a large-scale offensive around the provincial capital and the northern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate, producing substantial gains at the town of Bashkoy and the Al-Rashideen District in Aleppo City.

On Monday morning, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra – alongside their allies – captured a number of building blocks inside the Al-Rashideen District of the provincial capital; however, the Al-Qaeda combatants were unsuccessful in capturing the strategic Scientific Research Facility that the soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigades) remain entrenched at inside the district.

In addition to their success at Al-Rashideen, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra also achieved success at Bashkoy, where they captured the hills overlooking the town, including Tal Al-Afghani at the western outskirts.

With Jabhat Al-Nusra and their allies suffering heavy losses during this offensive, the Syrian Armed Forces chose the perfect time to began a small counter-offensive to retake the ground lost at Bashkoy and the Al-Rashideen District; this proved successful on Friday morning, as the soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army, the National Defense Forces, and Liwaa Al-Quds overpowered the Al-Qaeda combatants and recaptured a number of points.

Among those points recaptured by the Syrian Armed Forces, the aforementioned were able to retake control of Tal Al-Afghani and the hills surrounding the town of Bashkoy, killing and wounding a number of enemy combatants from Al-Qaeda in the process.

According to a military source in the Aleppo Governorate, the Syrian Armed Forces have killed over 100 Jabhat Al-Nusra militants in the span of four days; meanwhile, the Syrian Armed Forces reported 31 soldiers killed-in-action (KIA)."

Al-Qaeda Offensive in Aleppo Stalls; Syrian Army Recaptures More Territory

"Earlier this week, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – in coordination with their allies from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen – launched a large-scale offensive at the provincial capital of the Aleppo Governorate, where they attacked the Syrian Armed Forces’ frontline positions at both the western and northern sectors of the city.

Initially, the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen were successful, capturing a number of building blocks at the Al-Rashideen District before they were forestalled by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigades) near the Scientific Research Facility in the eastern sector of the district.

After a series of firefights over the course of six days, the Syrian Arab Army and Liwaa Al-Quds have managed to regain three building blocks near the Scientific Research Facility, while also regaining all of the territory lost at the town of Bashkoy on Friday morning; this alleviated the pressure on the Syrian Armed Forces and paved the way for them to advance from the Al-Khalidiyah District to the Al-Layramoun District.

On Saturday morning, the Syrian Armed Forces went on the offensive at the northern sector of the city, attacking the militants of Jabhat Al-Nusra and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham at the Sponge Factory located north of the Al-Khalidiyah District; this resulted in the Syrian Armed Forces asserting full control over the factory and its surroundings after intense clashes that lasted until the late afternoon.

With the success at Al-Khalidiyah and Al-Layramoun, the Syrian Armed Forces will need to recapture the remaining territory in the western sector of the Al-Rashidiyah District in order to completely reverse the Al-Qaeda group’s gains in western Aleppo."

Syrian Army Progresses in the Northern Sector of Aleppo City

"One week after the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” and their allies from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen launched a large-scale offensive in the provincial capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has reversed the tide of this battle after repelling the militants at the Al-Khalidiyah District and the Al-Rashideen District inside the city.

On Saturday, the Syrian Arab Army – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Kata’eb Al-Ba’ath (Ba’ath Battalions), and Liwaa Al- Quds (Jerusalem Brigades) – conducted a counter-assault on the militants from Jabhat Al-Nusra at the Al-Khalidiyah District, where they successfully recaptured all points that were under the enemy control, including the Sponge Factory.

Following their capture of the imperative Sponge Factory, the Syrian Armed Forces advanced from the Al-Khalidiyah District to the eastern perimeter of Al-Layramoun, where they subsequently captured three building blocks and two strategic factories at the aforementioned district inside the northern sector of the Aleppo Governorate.

Meanwhile, at the western front of Aleppo, the Syrian Armed Forces continued their counter-assault at the Al-Rashideen District and the Al-Zahra Association Quarter, killing 14 enemy combatants from Jabhat Al-Nusra and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen before they were able to recapture the Great Mosque of Aleppo near the Air Force Intelligence building (Al-Zahra).

North of the city, the militants from Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Jabhat Al-Nusra attacked Bashkoy once again after the aforementioned militants were forced out of the town by the Syrian Armed Forces; however, this time, the assault was repelled by the latter at Tal Al-Afghani on the outskirts of this area near the town of Rityan."

Syrian Army Recaptures Territory in Southern Aleppo

"On Saturday morning, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigades), and the Al-Ba’ath Battalion (Kata’eb Al-Battalions) – launched a counter-offensive in southern Aleppo to recapture the lost territory at the ‘Azzan Mountains and the hills near the Khanasser Highway.

The SAA and NDF began their counter-assault at the southeastern perimeter of Tal Sinoubrah, where they confronted a large contingent from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham (Liberation of the Levant Movement) and Liwaa Suqour Al-Sham (Levant Hawks Brigade), resulting in their subsequent capture of this hill in the ‘Azzan Mountains of southern Aleppo.

In addition to their success at Tal Sinoubrah, the Syrian Armed Forces captured the hill of Tal Sirrou, killing 14 enemy combatants from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and destroying two of their armored vehicles that were mounted with 14.5mm anti-aircraft machine guns.

With their success at Tal Sinoubrah and Tal Sirrou, the Syrian Armed Forces have secured the ‘Azzan Mountains of southern Aleppo after the militants from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham’s conducted a brief offensive last week.

Following a number of clean-up operations in southern Aleppo, the SAA and Liwaa Al-Quds targeted the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” and their allies from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen at the strategic Mafraq Al-Zakiyah Checkpoint on the Khanasser Highway; this resulted in the Syrian Armed Forces recapturing the checkpoint after a number of clashes on Saturday morning."

Jabhat Al-Nusra Attacks the Al-Zahra Association Once Again

"Fresh off their failed offensive in west Aleppo, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” – in coordination with Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen – launched another assault at the Great Prophet Mosque inside the Al-Zahra Association this morning.

The Islamist militant forces conducted their assault around 9:30 A.M. (Damascus Time) on Thursday morning, when they stormed the Syrian Arab Army’s frontline defenses at the Great Prophet Mosque; however, despite repeated attempts by Jabhat Al-Nusra to bypass their defenses, the Syrian Armed Forces repelled the attack.

According to a military source in Aleppo, the Syrian Armed Forces killed a confirmed 13 enemy combatants, including two fighters identified as “Mohammad Fares Al-Younis” and “Bassam Mahmoud ‘Abdullah.”

The Syrian Arab Army – in coordination with Liwaa Al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigades) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) – continued their assault on the Scientific Research Facility outside of the New Aleppo Quarter – firefights are reportedly still ongoing with no map changes.

Meanwhile, north of Aleppo City, Jabhat Al-Nusra and company launched a total of 22 rockets into the cities of Al-Zahra and Nubl from their positions Al-Mayer; this is believed to be a retaliatory strike against the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah for their offensive at the city of Al-Zabadani in western Syria.

The Free Syrian Army’s 55th Battalion has reportedly withdrawn from the town of Al-Mazra’ in northern Aleppo after fierce clashes with the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham on Thursday morning.

In east Aleppo, ISIS attempted to infiltrate into the southern perimeter of the Kuweires Military Airbase; however, they were repelled by the Syrian Armed Forces stationed at this strategically located airport near the city of Safira.

Firefights between the Syrian Armed Forces and Islamist rebels were also reported at Al-Bureijj, Al-Hamidiyah, Jabal ‘Azzan, Al-Layramoun, Bani Zayd, Al-Manasheer, Al-Handarat, and Bashkoy."

Al-Masdar Exclusive: Tiger Forces Arrive in East Aleppo

"The Syrian Arab Army’s special operations contingent known as the “Tiger Forces” have finally arrived at the city of Al-Safira in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside after a short stint in the Al-Sha’ar an Jazal Mountains of east Homs.

Led by Colonel Soheil Al-Hassan (AKA: “Al-Nimr” or “tiger” in English), the Tiger Forces are set to begin their new offensive to lift the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) brutal two year long siege of the Kuweires Military Airport in east Aleppo.

However, the SAA’s Tiger Forces will face-off against ISIS inside an area of east Aleppo that is firmly under the control of the terrorist group; this will likely result in a bloody battle for control of this territory in the Jabboul Lake region of the province.

For the Tiger Forces, their brigade will split-up: as a contingent will remain on the east Homs front, under the command of Captain Lu’ayy Sleitan; while the other contingent begins this new offensive in east Aleppo, under the command of Soheil Al-Hassan.

Not only is the liberation of Kuweires Military Airport important, but also, the security of the main supply route for the Syrian Government on the Khanasser Highway; if lost, the Syrian Armed Forces will be without a direct supply line to the provincial capital.

The Kuweires Military Airport’s proximity to the terrorist group’s stronghold at Deir Hafer makes this a vital military endeavor for the Syrian Armed Forces; this city is the headquarters for ISIS in east Aleppo."

Syrian Air Force Pounds ISIS at Kuweires Airport on the Eve of the Tiger Forces Offensive

On Tuesday morning, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) launched a multitude of airstrikes near the Kuweires Military Airport in the Aleppo Governorate, killing scores of fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), including a Chechen field commander of the terrorist group that was identified as “Abu ‘Umar Al-Sheeshaani.”

According to a military source in Al-Safira, the Syrian Air Force conducted a total of 44 airstrikes on Tuesday; this was likely in preparation for the imminent Tiger Forces offensive that is set to begin in the coming days.

The Syrian Arab Army’s Tiger Forces arrived in the city of Al-Safira on Saturday after spending a short deployment at the Al-Sha’ar Mountains in the eastern countryside of Homs.

The Tiger Forces are tasked with the assignment to lift the brutal two-year long ISIS siege on the Kuweires Military Airport that has left almost 400 soldiers stranded at this base.

Yesterday, reports surfaced of an airstrike on the Scientific Research Facility of Al-Safira that was either conducted by the Anti-ISIS Coalition or the Turkish Air Force; this was not the case, as sources close to Al-Masdar News confirmed that this was an explosion caused by artillery shells that were fired by ISIS militants from the Jabboul Lake area.
