they have 58... brown who took kennedy, and lieberman who is independent and going againt the bill...

if the vote were just a mere majority vote, it would have been done already imo....they would have just pushed it through from the get go....again, imo.

So this past year was not about concern about 'poor people dying because of the big, bad insurance companies'.... it was all a lead up to the 'Obama Talk Show' yesterday? So he could show Americans how bad the Republicans are? Really? Gee, that is interesting. See, cuz he had 60 fucking votes for over a year and did not pass this 'vital' bill. So Obama cares more about showing up Republicans than 'taking care of the folks'.

I agree. Obama dropped the ball. His lack of leadership at a critical juncture allowed Congress to once again fuck things up.

The time is NOW. Waiting until after the elections means it does not get done at all. This is what happened in 1993. Democrats lost their nerve and nothing got done.

Only problem? At this point I don't even think the Democrats have the votes to push this through using reconciliation.

For the record, reconciliation is only for budgetary items. Since when is health care a budgetary item? Even Byrd.... and he designed it.... says it should not be used. And.... just so we're clear.... y'all could have passed this months ago.... like when you had the super majority.

Reason it hasn't passed not because of the Republicans, it is because not enough Democrats are stupid enough to agree with it.

Gawd, it pains me to see the breathtaking stupidity about reconciliation.

Wanna know a secret? The Dems' proposed use of reconciliation wouldn't pass the bill in its entirety.

it won't matter the democrats are pushing something that while idealistically is great, it won't work.

first they should move towards legislating the free market system first - let companies compete across state lines, and like in the telecom industry, you drive down the costs.

Second, you have to have hospitals start itemizing their charges and limite the markup, people really are paying 12$ for a tylenol, there should be a mandate that each health system systematically price lists what is spends for pain killers or propofol and can't mark it up above a certain %.

Billing centers, hospitals and doctors now bill from different offices, this causes twice the administrative costs, roll this in together, hospitals and health systems should be mandated to have a single billing unit.

Implement laws to force this to the states, Mass and Hawaii have state health care, rather than one massive healthcare body, how about 50 smaller ones that are more agile to the needs of their constituients are don't blind voters with the sheer amount of zero's. If a fed program is off 10% it is a far greater number than if a state is off by 10%. This would be easier for a state to manage.

We also have a wealth disparity in this country and a lack of education compared to europe or canada. Not in sheer numbers but in terms of %'s. We have issues with obesity and our diets that will drive this costs, the rich will be paying more for the poor who don't take as good of care of their health. They eat cheaper foods and are more sedintary - so there are a lot of fiscal and moral pieces here, factor in food, alcohol, and smoking and you will have healthy paying for sick, sick caused by life choices, try selling that and managing that on the federal level.

We can't just look at the ideal, we need to also look at the administration and the fed has shown it can't handle things, from Katrina to spending, our govt pays less than the private sector, over hires and itself can't reign in its own administrative costs. Fed employees have matched 401k and defined pension plans, the same pension plans that are sinking gm, the fed doesn't have to answer for this practice, hire less competent people and you need to hire more, so your benefits costs grow exponentially. This is why fed costs tend to balloon. When they implement a program it is reactionary rather than forward thinking. The inability to move and cross train workers leads to burdens when it is difficult to reduce your head count. Then we the american people watch our debt increase and can't pay for the programs we need to improve education or monitor or prescription drugs adequately.

Serious question, where those bush tax cuts for the rich budgetary issues? you know, the cuts that cost us 1.8 trillion. You know, more than the health care bill we are getting through. Those bush tax cuts that were done under reconciliation. THOSE TAX CUTS.
