Mail carrier from Burlington County admits to stealing $442K in tax refund checks

april 29 2016 Earl Champagne, 47, of Willingboro, admitted Friday in Camden federal court to stealing 72 tax refund checks while working as a mail carrier on his route in Pennsauken, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. The U.S. Postal worker from 1995 until November 2014 committed the thefts totaling $442,776 between March and July during his last year of employment.

Prosecutors said Champagne stole U.S. Treasury checks for two unnamed co-conspirators. The individuals — one from Maple Shape and the other from Merchantville — asked Champagne to retrieve checks and the postal worker would in turn be paid.

The mail carrier received $50 a pop for every stolen check.

I've heard several stories like this mail theft by carriers over the years, but race was never identified. A very big tell on the OP.
