Actually, that's not in the Bible – CNN Belief Blog - CNN.com Blogs

NFL legend Mike Ditka was giving a news conference one day after being fired as the coach of the Chicago Bears when he decided to quote the Bible. “Scripture tells you that all things shall pass,” a choked-up Ditka said after leading his team to only five wins during the previous season. “This, too, shall pass.” Ditka fumbled his biblical citation, though. The phrase “This, too, shall pass” doesn’t appear in the Bible. Ditka was quoting a phantom scripture that sounds like it belongs in the Bible, but look closer and it’s not there.

Ditka’s biblical blunder is as common as preachers delivering long-winded public prayers. The Bible may be the most revered book in America, but it’s also one of the most misquoted. Politicians, motivational speakers, coaches - all types of people - quote passages that actually have no place in the Bible, religious scholars say.

These phantom passages include:

“God helps those who help themselves.”

“Spare the rod, spoil the child.”

And there is this often-cited paraphrase: Satan tempted Eve to eat the forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden. None of those passages appear in the Bible, and one is actually anti-biblical, scholars say.

Kind of humorous.

I think that information is great. Many times we often think something is said in the Bible and it isn't exactly said that way, or it's off just a bit. I know I've made some of the same mistakes. Been quickly corrected though, which is good, lol.

Here's some others.

"Money is the root of all evil."

Actual:
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

"Pride comes before the fall."

Actual:
Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

"Spare the rod, spoil the child."

Proverbs 13:24
He who withholds his rod hates his son,
But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.

Depending on which Bible translation and how words can be dropped.
Paraphrased for simplicity, of course, which you are not disputing.
TY Marie888 for "Spare the rod, spoil the child" verse.

As for the rest:
"This, too, shall pass"
"This too shall pass." 1 Corinthians 10:12

“God helps those who help themselves.”
The Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves”
Psalm 37:39-40 “The salvation of the righteous is from the
Lord; he is their refuge in the time of trouble. The Lord
helps them and rescues them; he rescues them from the
wicked, and saves them, because they take refuge in him.”
NRSV

"Satan tempted Eve to eat the forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden"
Gen 3: 1-6
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate.
"Satan" or evil, is what represents the serpent. And perhaps, the snake was invaded by the devil! The tongue action of a snake always gives me the willies.

And remember Mike Ditka did not give the book, chapter and verse.

Thanks for making me do some research!
