Mississippians by droves participated, through other state lotteries, in the $1.6 billion Powerball lottery that was won recently, but the state of Mississippi did not participate.

Mississippi is one of six states that does not conduct a lottery. The others are Alabama, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii and Alaska.

If you live in any of these states, you can play a state lottery, just not your own state. You can subscribe to the Massachusetts State Lottery by phone, they will ship subscriptions to your address, anywhere in the US.

Rep. Preston Sullivan, D-Okolona, said, “A lot of money is leaving Mississippi going to other states.”

The attention created by the record Powerball payout has created new interest in the Mississippi Legislature for a state lottery.

How much money is gambled on political party candidates competing for the same office?
Does that count as a form of legalized gambling?

With political campaigns, who profits off the money, the media?
So they cash in and win, no matter who wins or loses, they get paid for air time. Right?

Maybe states should tap that source of money. Wouldn't it be great if
that was enough to fund govt programs and bailing out debts
instead of riding on taxpayers to foot the bill.

Whatever tax rate that politicians vote for taxpayers to pay, maybe the same % should be applied to the contributions they receive and/or the millions they spend on advertising.

Otherwise, where is all that money going?

Cornel West: Obama Is A 'Rockefeller Republican In 'Blackface;' Sharpton, Harris-Perry, Dyson Are Up For Sale

"I think that it’s morally obscene and spiritually profane to spend $6 billion on an election, $2 billion on a presidential election, and not have any serious discussion—poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the 1 percent are doing very well, no talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama, so that our struggle with regard to poverty intensifies."
