Second Amendment fanatics constantly boast that a good-guy-with-a-gun can save the day.
This fairy tale has been proven wrong countless times, but it persists. The Second Amendment fanatics see themselves as someday intervening in a police shoot-out and knowing immediately what the situation requires. They know that, like on TV, they will be able to see what is happening from many different angles, and recognize who is a policeman and who is the “bad-guy-with-a-gun”. They will act with fearlessness and precision, their ability being superior to those trained in law enforcement.
Basically, these Second Amendment fanatics envision themselves as “Dirty Harry”
Well, that isn’t how it is, and police officers in St. Louis discovered this when they shot one of their own who was off duty. Of course, the off-duty officer the white cops shot was black.
As has been reported, after the stolen car they were chasing crashed, the two white cops, naturally fearing for their safety, began shooting at the suspects. Hearing what was happening outside his home, the black, off-duty officer went to assist.
The two white cops, again fearing for their safety, “ ‘challenged the off-duty officer and ordered him to the ground, to which he complied.’ ”
The two white cops finally recognized the black-man-with-a-gun, now face-down on the pavement, as a fellow St Louis policeman, “and told him to stand up and walk towards them.”
Believing himself to be safe, the black, off-duty officer rose to his feet and walked toward his white colleagues. Then, a third white cop, pumped up on adrenaline with expectations of a gunfight arrived.
The third white cop, again, fearing for HIS safety, and seeing a black-man-with-a-gun approaching his buddies, pumped a slug into the black off-duty officer. He did this before taking the few seconds required to discern the true situation, and was lucky his eagerness to kill didn’t do more damage than wounding the black officer in his arm.
It is expected that Second Amendment fanatics will learn nothing from this incident. They will go on with their mistaken belief that they can someday be heroes. They believe, with no doubt what-so-ever, they will know instinctively who the bad guy is, and will take him out with one clean shot.
But, this myth does not hold up under scrutiny, and unfortunately, this does not deter Second Amendment fanatics' fantasy, how, with their clean-cut good looks, nerves of steel, and heroic demeanor, they will stand as shining examples of what a good-guy-with-a-gun can do.
This incident in St. Louis adds to the volumes of evidence already collected, that the majority of Americans are correct in wanting common sense gun restrictions passed nationwide.
