I am culturally 'liberal', but I don't believe in imposing my views on others through government - not to mention I reject the stance that the 'majority is always right', so I do like the checks and balances of the US political system. While I might support the welfare state, I do so pragmatically, economically I would agree with a lot of 'conservatives' on the free market. So I am a bit of both, not one or the other.

To put it plainly, I view the Chicago Boys types negatively as they use sophistry and authoritarian measures, rather than allow people to decide freely between a free market system or socialism. You cannot force people to be capitalists, it the anti-thesis of individualism to do so. When the threat of force is removed, the reforms gradually unravel, which is what has happened in Chile in recent years.

The global recession, the dictatorships in South America, then Russia or China, duh. Wonder if you have been down a well all these years, if you can't see obvious examples of false 'free markets' and their consequences.
