Earlier this year Trump announced a big ol' MAGA tariff on solar panels imported from China. This was great news for the U.S. solar industry, who later announced $1 billion in investment and job hires! However, this was bad news for the U.S. solar industry, who later announced $2.5 billion in investment and jobs losses. Thank you for joining me, in today's brief lesson on tariffs. :11_2_1043:

Billions in U.S. solar projects shelved after Trump panel tariff
/----/ From your link:
‘A LOT OF ROBOTS’
Trump’s tariff has boosted the domestic manufacturing sector as intended, which over time could significantly raise U.S. panel production and reduce prices.

Panel manufacturers First Solar (FSLR.O) and JinkoSolar (JKS.N), for example, have announced plans to spend $800 million on projects to increase panel construction in the United States since the tariff, creating about 700 new jobs in Ohio and Florida. Just last week, Korea’s Hanwha Q CELLS (HQCL.O) joined them, saying it will open a solar module factory in Georgia next year, though it did not detail job creation.

SunPower Corp, meanwhile, purchased U.S. manufacturer SolarWorld’s Oregon factory after the tariff was announced, saving that facility’s 280 jobs. The company said it plans to hire more people at the plant to expand operations, without specifying how many.
Less overall production and more lost jobs. Prices all around go up = less demand = less production. Wealth destruction.

Yea but those select few workers bank money

No?

Canada has tariffs on us. They only got rid of some after NAFTA
Doesnt china have a 100% tariff on our poultry?
Hek, we have 12,000 tariffs right now. Why is it all of a sudden so bad?

Tariffs are great in a socialist economy, as they are a tool of control by the central government...
But a great many of you seem to want that for the US

This is what I don't get about you guys, tariffs and a higher minimum wage is basically the same thing to me, a tax that's all it is..with tariffs a select few products cost me more, with minimum wage everything cost me a little bit more and pennies add up to dollars.

You should contact Canada, EU and China than and tell the sob's to decrease their tariffs, we both agree they are bad!
Those nations hurt themselves with their tariffs far more than America. Consider the EU, that has almost double the population of the U.S. but cannot match its GDP. Same with Canada, with a worse GDP per capita. Then China, with a far worse GDP per capita and hundreds of millions living in conditions that the average American would consider atrocious.

Well, then why are they increasing tariffs now in retaliation?

They cannot compete with America in an apples to apples comparison, they have to cheat, lie, misrepresent, act covertly and quietly against you, use the media and global socialist influence to convince America that these countries are your "allies".

I really want someone to define ally for me, I can tell you I can define enemy very easily.

This is so silly and sad. Wanna try to sell U.S.-made solar panels and technology in China? Guess what you'll pay to do so? You see, why is it that it's bad for us to do the same thing that China and many other nations have been doing for decades, namely, protecting their industries with tariffs?
You need to realize that you're calling for China stop giving us such great deals on a product that employs thousands in many businesses. That's Trump's demand here. There are no tariffs against American manufactured solar panels in China. The Chinese government subsidizes solar panel makers so they can lower prices. Chinese taxpayers are literally paying for a portion of your new solar panels.

Now, if the free traders don't succeed in overturning this tariff, the U.S. market will adjust to the tariff rates and our solar-panel industry will be just fine.
It will produce less because the high price will lower the demand. The price will go up because Americans don't like to live China's conditions, and command a higher salary. The solar industry then sinks, and possibly disappears because it's become that much harder to compete with other energy sources.

Here's a lesson in tariffs for you: We became an industrial and economic powerhouse behind the protection of high tariffs for decades. In fact, from the 1850s until the 1960s, the Republican Party was the champion of protective tariffs. Such notable Republicans as Abrham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, William Howard Taft, Calvin Coolidge, and Robert Taft ("Mr. Republican" in the 1940s and 50s) supported protective tariffs.
You traded for a fraction of what's available now. Access to the rest of the world was difficult back then, and less products existed. Tariffs couldn't do that much harm because there wasn't that much competition. We did not become a superpower because of tariffs from the 19th and early 20th century.

you want a min wage thread - start one

Tumps tariffs are as F'd up as he is

take a wild guess how much steel US auto manufacturers use in one day - now tell everyone how they make up that tariff increase

but you cant because youre an idiot.

Can someone start by telling me how it is good for America to have huge trade deficits? Why is that desirable to the left?

Because it makes us poor, and the left want's us poor.

They increase tariffs because that's how trade wars work. You make something more expensive for me (and, stupidly, for yourself as well), so I make something more expensive for you. We all lose. Chinese taxpayers used to pay for part of your new solar panel, but now if you want that solar panel the U.S. government is forcing to pay a hefty tax on it or to buy more expensive ones from the U.S. You'll have to let several employees go, cancel some projects, work with lesser profits, and be less competitive against fossil fuels, but oh well. All this makes you want a drink. At the store, you realize the price of your favorite beer is a higher than before. Wasn't there something in the news about aluminum tariffs?

It's always been bad. More sure doesn't make it better.

Indeed. Thanks to the capitalist system. For all of its faults, and there are many, the capitalist system generates more wealth, for more people, than any other system the world has ever seen. That's why progressives hate it. People who aren't poor, can't be herded like sheep. Progressives require sheep.

Transaction~ you don't want to admit tariffs and a higher minimum wage are the same thing to an average worker like me.

Higher minimum wage = screws me

Tariffs = screws me but not as bad.

You can't attack progressives while being one yourself. Tariffs are not a capitalist concept. The rest of your post is beyond garbage. How did you become a mod? :cuckoo:

How does it make us poor?

Please explain how me buying a car from Korea instead of Detroit makes “us” poor?

Sent from my iPhone using USMessageBoard.com

Because manufacturing jobs pay more than service related jobs. If we buy all our cars from korea, the US auto industry closes up shop, and all of those people making good wages instead go and work at starbucks for less than half of what they were making.
