Last September, scores of patent-holders demonstrated in six cities across the U.S. wearing black t-shirts that said, "Homo sapiens inventoris: Endangered Species." These men and women of ingenuity were protesting America's decade of stolen dreams: the years since the passage of the America Invents Act (AIA) of 2011 and the establishment of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), which together have made it easy for big corporations to steal their ideas and profit from them with impunity.![]()

Most of Edison's patents were due to espionage. He had spies all over the world who would report innovations back to him while he had other people who basically camped out at the patent office. This method has never changed.I am fine with the first to the patent office idea. It is far more practical than me inventing something and someone coming along 25 years after they did the same thing taking it away. There needs to be a practical way for the patent office to do it, and first to file is the only way that really works.
