Yuri Shatunov had very popularity in the late 80s-90s, his image was comparable to Thomas Anders.
Why could he be killed? Because he represented the culture of the Urals, and the Urals was the birthplace of Yeltsin and the power, which non-officially opposed the West, Moscow and St. Petersburg, which gravitates to the left regime, both historically and culturally.
No artist had such popularity in the USSR as Yuri Shatunov and no one enjoyed such a success among women, it was a phenomenal success.
