US Congress Salaries and Benefits – Salaries and Benefits of US Congress MembersMembers of Congress are not eligible for a pension until they reach the age of 50, but only if they've completed 20 years of service. Members are eligible at any age after completing 25 years of service or after they reach the age of 62. Please also note that Members of Congress have to serve at least 5 years to even receive a pension.
The amount of a congressperson's pension depends on the years of service and the average of the highest 3 years of his or her salary. By law, the starting amount of a Member's retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final salary.

pretty nice, work 5....get a pension......
Yep. They make out pretty well. How many holidays and breaks do they take during the course of a year?? Pretty good deal for someone who's payed with taxpayer dollars.
Of course THEY voted this for themselves.
Wonder if my boss would let me do the same??
Don't think so.

A Congressman who served five years would get a pension of $8700 a year starting at age 62. I can see why so many want to be Congressmen

Awesome! I wish my job allowed me to give myself a raise and gave me a pension for doing nothing for 5 years.
I hear through the military that, regardless of length of service, they will only get up to 25% retirement benefits. And vet benefits got slashed too.
This is how we repay those who defend us?
Really?
I have no objection entitlements being slashed.... but not for those who put their lives at risk for the rest of us.
Fucking congress critters and their fucking self serving, corrupt, attitudes.
This is why I don't support either of your stinking parties. Fuck 'em. All of 'em.

After 20 years, the military get 50% of their final pay. It increases 2.5% for every additional year. What is great about military retirement is that you do not have to wait until you are 60 to start collecting it. You can start collecting as early as 37 and collect for the rest of your life.

That's what it is now. What I hear is that is not what it will be shortly.
So it's very sweet of you to reference the current status, but I am more interested in what our congress plans to do to those who defend us.

Who's gonna change it? Congress?
It's been that way for eons, but you can blame Obama if it makes you feel better.
