Here's the thing... we could end the "Illegal" problem really easily without a wall, which is actually counterproductive.

1) Establish a national ID card with biometrics.
2) Require all employers to use a service to verify eligibility for employment.
3) Go after the people who try to get around the system with a vengeance.

One that is an immediate national security crisis that has arisen somewhat suddenly and Congress may not have time or cohesiveness to act on. Emergency has a meaning. Not at all. We were sold by lieing trump that the wall fixes drug trafficking. However, it is evidenced that a large percentage of drugs move in bulk through secured ports. My point isnt that more drugs go through the port or over the open border, although a semi can carry far more drugs farther and faster and be tracked better than a person with a back pack sooo my money is on ports. It's that a simple obstacle like a wall isnt going to stop shit except the dumbest, laziest, and poorest. Anyone resourceful enough will get around it. The US appetite and funding for drugs and human trafficking is such that no matter what obstacle we put, even a secured port of entry or a wall, the lucrative contraband trafficking will find a way through. You'd be an ignorant fool to believe his lies on it. And it turns out that that's why his base loves it.

Imo, you gotta ask what the goal is to develop a proper solution set. The main goal is probably not reducing trafficking on it's own. Look at what cyber security has developed into. It is now more so about identifying incursion via layered and varied perimeters in real time and finding out what the attack is doing, than it is about blocking all attacks. They want to compartmentalize as much as possible, as well. Obviously it would be nice if you could put up a firewall and block everything, but it's not realistic just like with the full border wall. The risk is too high and the intruders are too resourceful and persistent to invest too heavily in that type of solution.

Well, no, we realize that it would make the problem worse, as the fencing we have already has.

You see, before we put up a bunch of fencing, people would come in, people would go out, sometimes several times a year. They make some money during harvest or construction season. It's why we only had about 3 million illegals in the country in 1990.

What happened after we started putting up fencing is that people would come in for the seasonal work, and then they would stay because, heck, getting back in or out would be too much trouble.

After 2010, the numbers started to go down because of improved economic conditions in Mexico and enhanced workplace enforcement in this country.
