Muff has two definitions other than the one you obviously are thinking about:

1. A tube made of fur or other warm material into which the hands are placed
for warmth.

2. A mistake or failure, esp. a failure to catch or receive a ball cleanly.

I am sure that the transition from galoshes to muff involves the first definition. A long time ago, a muff and galoshes would have been normal attire on a snowy day. I haven't seen a muff used in decades so I am not surprised you haven't heard of it.

At any rate, the new word is:

Hands

Gee that's why I love this site,and Guys like you Proff, Our Christmas period is all beach,water and sunshine.......but I do remember a fur-muff on a winter scene Christmas card...I digress.
