If a woman had 4 kids in the 1940s, there was a good chance that two of them would die. A woman would still have a husband and 2 kids to take care of while she grieved. That is strength.

A woman had to be able to be the head of the household when her husband went to war. That is strength.

A woman had to cook, wash, iron, clean and raise kids without the benefit of modern appliances. That is strength.

But none of those types of strength are independence.
