There are some wild misunderstandings of the applicable portions of the Fifth Amendment out there.
"No person...shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself..."
This is because in our system of JUSTICE, the prosecution has the burden of proving guilt. If an alleged perpetrator is compelled to take the stand, then that person has the right to refuse to answer questions. The right is deemed to be waived whenever a single answer is voluntarily given. Therefore legal Counsel invariably cautions clients to refuse to answer any and all questions when the client is compelled to take the stand.
In addition to revealing incriminating information, questions can be formulated to make the witness APPEAR guilty, even though innocent of the specific charges, or even of other crimes unrelated to the charges in question. "When did you stop beating your wife?"
In this phony "insurrection" affair, the phony House Panel is trying to mount a phony case against former President Trump, so as to harm him should he decide to run again. There is no real indication that President Trump or anyone on his staff promoted the takeover of the Federal Government by force - the very thought of it is preposterous. It is all a show trial. It would be foolish of ANYONE to testify before this gang of toadies about anything whatsoever.
