Wisconsin protest has lost a LOT of steam

I had a feeling yesterday's "break" would take a lot of the wind out of their sales, and it apparently has.

I suspect it will pick back up again tomorrow, as the Governor begins sending out the pink slips. Supposedly 2000 to be laid off this week, unless they get a quorum first.

He'll probably reduce hours first; that way everyone can get a feel for the impact of the problem before actually reducing personnel. But personnel reductions will be in the back of everyoneÂ’s mind.

The union will continue to say that any reductions would be made unnecessary if he’d only raise taxes on the “very wealthy.”

Why did he unbalence the buget by giving the corps more money?
He has made it clear; the object is to encourage corporations to take up business in Wisconsin, not drive them away with higher taxes. More corporations in Wisconsin means new jobs, more tax revenues. Keeping corporations in Wisconsin means preserving jobs, and keeping the revenue base from leaving. It's what he ran on.

Wow....just looked at the stream again....

Even fewer there now.

I'd be tired too.

Even the big drummer has taken a break.

When people stand in line longer at the DMV, they will remember.

When people find out their kids are in classes of 40 or more, they will remember.

When people wait longer for licenses of all kinds from the state or county, they will remember.

The families of the teachers and other public employees will remember.

Keep dreaming.

This is never going to stop until the right stops trying to take rightss away from Americans

Taking "Rights from Americans??

Jeeze. I've never seen in the Constitution that Collective Bargaining was a Right??

You'll have to dig right in and show me where it says that TDM.

I'll wait.

Do the public employees now posses teh right to collective bargaining?

Does Walker want to take that right from them?

Jesus. Where have you been??

Thats what this protest by the public workers is all about. The Gov wants to end collective bargaining except for wages and benefits. The Union wants it all.

The balless Dems left the State so it wouldn't come to a vote becasue they knew it would pass. The apparantly only represent the Union members in WI.

The Gov is giving tax cuts to business to get other business to come to WI. He's trying to get jobs into the State. Its a tough sell because there are many right to work states out there which are far more attractive to anyone with a business.

The American way.

They're tired. They'll be back.

Because next week, many of them won't have jobs to worry about any longer.

I'm happy for the folks who are out of work today, but will gladly take these peoples' jobs as soon as they become available (likely next year). The children will benefit from the excitement and energy of a new, not-yet-jaded army of teachers.

Attitudes like this from the Right/Republicans will be remembered.

And your comments about "new" teachers are amusing....seems to me, you think these "new" teachers can be plucked off the street rather than having to go thru 5 years of college and various qualification standards. What WI people are learning is that they should not go into teaching unless they are masochists.

Just a technical correction, the Governor want's to end all collective bargaining except for base wages.

He also wants to end voluntary payroll deduction of dues? Now does that have a budget impact? No. But it is adding a hurdle to being in the union and seems kid of petty to me.

Where in the Constitution does it say that municipal employees have the right to extort every last dime from a destitute state? Republicans are ensuring the rights of middle class citizens and everyone else to fairly bargain with municipal employees unions.

See above, you just proved that you have no concept about the time and qualifications needed to be a teacher....but I suspect you think that new ones can simply be plucked off the street, like McDonalds workers.

There is a surplus of QUALIFIED teachers in the US right now.

And there are plenty who will happily and thankfully take the positions of those who are calling in sick.

But today, the striking teachers have taken a break. We will see if losing their jobs gets them back to the Capitol. I say it will.

Really...you have the statistics to back that up, right? Particularly since I know my brother's district has a very, very hard time getting subs for classes since there are not that many out there around here.

Looks like we are using the same statistics.....personal experience.

There are literally HUNDREDS of QUALIFIED teachers within 200 miles of me. Proration and a flooded base of candidates are likely the biggest factors, but the market is what it is. Around here, subs are literally a dime a dozen. They would happily move to Wisconsin to fill an opening in the career which they pursued through all those years of education.

Like I said, Montgomery just closed 8 schools last week alone, and they are the norm, and not the exception.

These Teachers have as usual forgotten that they work for the Taxpayers. They just think everything's all about them and their Democrat brethren. The People wont forget. More & more Americans want Unions out of Government completely. Public Unions only serve themselves and the Democratic Party. Time for them to go.

15th post
The Capitol seems to be the place for lunch!

About 50-60? there now, and the drummers are on a break.

Be interesting to see if it builds or wanes after lunch.

The same place yours are that say there isn't anyone ready to take their jobs.

Your personal agenda is clouding your argument.

The truth is we have too many teachers, and we're losing teaching positions every day.

Wisconsin will not miss a beat.

Then Wisconsin can be our statistics.
