Will/should the Left run a progressive independent candidate?

The GOP's ability to run their own anti-Trump candidate (whether this candidate is independent or carries the GOP banner will depend) who could win the election depends solely on whether or not an independent that appeals to the left runs after Hillary gets the Democratic party nomination.

If the left runs Hillary and no one challenges that then a third candidate knows they are running a campaign to merely eat away from Trump's votes, guaranteeing a Hillary win but also ensuring Trump won't be president. Trump-******, don't think for a second, Romney wouldn't be willing to run and lose again if it meant your boy Trump loses too

If a progressive alternative runs alongside Hillary, then there is a chance that progressive alternative wins the general election. It also means there's a chance the Anti-Trump candidate on the right could win, because Hillary's votes will be divided. This is tricky..... Will it happen?

Bernie said he won't run as an independent. Bernie has changed things. He has lit a fire. A true progressive figure may feel motivated to step in as an independent if Bernie and his supporters are done dirty

I don't see it happening
Hillary will be better than Trump. But it's extremely difficult for one party to maintain the seat of presidency beyond 3 election cycles. I could see Hillary being a one-term president due to a variety of reasons

The right had 8 years of kicking and screaming about Obama, and were not able to come up with a worthwhile candidate for 2016, so maybe Hillary could be a 2-term president... Who knows

If there were three other candidates running, maybe. But that's quite a long shot.

Exactly:

Candidate 1: Hillary, the Democratic party's nominee
Candidate 2: Trump, the GOP let's him have his cake and carry the GOP banner
Candidate 3: The anti-Trump, more in-tune with the actual GOP but running as an independent. Knows they are running to just ensure Trump doesn't win, unless a fourth candidate runs that would eat into the voting going on in the left

I think the GOP establishment good guys and gals will do everything to stop DT from getting a majority of the votes before convention. If not, they will let have it and deny him any Party help.

The candidate in this scenario would have to have established winnability (if that's a word) in quite a lot of states (for instance, if Bernie were to win enough remaining western states with a wide enough margin.

The tricky part is that if the none of the candidates win enough of the electoral vote, it gets decided by the GOP controlled House of Representative (which I'm sure the GOP establishment has in the back of their minds as a possible way to defeat Trump as well)
