Why should asylum seekers get to chose where they want to live?

It seems ridiculous that an alleged asylum seeker from Central America should be able to pass through Mexico to line up at the U.S. border. By definition, they have already escaped from their home countries, so why should they be given a choice of countries in which they would like to reside? The U.S. has no obligation to admit persons who are no longer suffering the oppression they claim from their home countries.
 
They don't. Legally they may only apply for asylum at the first available country.
