Simple. He could keep Trump from even dreaming of winning Ohio. There are some republicans who are willing to lose to Clinton in order to prevent Trump from making this the worst election for the GOP.....ever.

The "independent" candidate only needs to compete in a few key states to provide insurance against the Trump disaster.

If the GOP establishment ***** this election up so that Hillary wins,the GOP will be destroyed. If they don't want the base, they can build themselves a new all liberal party and plan on losing elections forever like the Libertarians.

If Kasich ran on the third rail, he could win almost every single swing state with relative ease. It would be great to watch for the lulz alone. That being said, the OP has yet to produce any actual evidence of his assertion.
