So my home team has a shot at the national championship this year,, they are a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. But it looks like they just lost their point guard during the PAC 12 Conference tournament to an ankle injury. My question is why play these tournaments? The conference champions are already decided by the season record and the NCAA and NIT tournaments are far more important. And no I'm not just whining that the Wildcats chances at the championship just probably went out the window. I've been against these useless tournaments for years, this injury just underscores the point.

The tournament seeding is not set yet, how could your team be a #1 seed?

I understand what you're saying about conference tournaments though. The only good thing is, the winner is an automatic bid for the NCAA tournament, so it gives the lesser teams one last chance to make it.

If you win your conference tournament don’t you get an auto bid to the dance?

I have always hated these tournaments. It’s march. Start the ncaa tournament. **** these tournaments. Just go by their records who won the conference championship.

But it’s big money they’ll never change this. But I agree. I don’t care about these either.

For some schools it's a chance to make the tournament. That's why schools try to win it. I dont think it has as much to do with money as you think. Who's really watching these games? They play them on weekdays during the day. Unless you are a fan of the teams playing, you're likely not tuning in.

Are the stands packed? I dont know because I don’t watch.

Me either. There's no real money at the gate anyway it's on TV. What could you possibly charge for a ticket to a non championship game conference tourney match up? I can get a ticket to see Duke play Va Tech in the ACC championship for 11 bucks. They are playing that at the Barclay's center 18k capacity. Coach K's final ACC tourney, championship game, in NY, and it's 11 dollars? Im guessing a Big 10 Champ game is free and they'll throw in a hand job if you want it just to fill the stands.

VaTech about the punch their ticket to the NCAA tourney with an upset win over Duke tonight. That’s why they play these tourneys.

The regular season provides plenty of data to pick the best teams for the NCAA tourney.
Sure. But VaTech is hot and won their way in. you asked why they play the games and a perfect example happens and it’s not good enough.

Ultimately, the reason they keep the conference tourneys is like Meister said. It generates a lot of money for the colleges. If you want to get in, then get hot at the end of the season.

Does it really? Who’s watching these games on TV in the middle of the day on a weekday? How much money could they possibly be making?
