The conservative movement has spent the days following the shocking murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk attacking a bedrock American value: free speech.

In the most high-profile incident, the Federal Communications Commission pressured ABC parent The Walt Disney Company to sideline talk show host Jimmy Kimmel after he made a joke mocking President Donald Trump’s response to Kirk’s death. This followed CBS canceling “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” shortly after the network paid a $16 million settlement to President Donald Trump over how “60 Minutes” edited an interview with Kamala Harris.

Vice President JD Vance and senior White House aide Stephen Miller have argued that a crackdown on left-of-center groups is necessary to stop people from telling the truth about what a bigot and conspiracy theorist Kirk was.

To give cover to their war on speech, conservatives have declared nearly everything they oppose politically as “woke,” and then pushed for the removal of “woke” things— including speech and diversity—from public and private institutions and individuals.

Conservatism has a serious problem when it comes to competing in an open war of ideas. Many conservative priorities, like racism and economic policies bent around the desires of the ultra-wealthy, are not popular with the public at large. To allow an open exchange of ideas is to allow for the chance that liberalism and the Democratic Party might succeed.

Good article, but the author could have just said they are all scared little snowflakes, and saved bandwidth.

Christianists are the worst.

We just endured the four years of a mentally impaired president who allowed the Country be run by a person or persons unknown while the federal law enforcement agencies were weaponized in support of liberalism. Concerned parents in Virginia became terrorist suspects for complaining about the treatment of their kids. Trump was impeached on the basis of fraudulent faked documents and he was indicted on frivolous charges. His home was invaded by militarized federal cops and his wife's underwear drawer was even violated by federal cops allegedly looking for classified documents. When that didn't work the crazy TDS left set him up for two assassination attempts. Now the crazy TDS left wants to quote the Constitution in defense of an unfunny comic who was costing more than he was worth? WTF?

Christianists are the worst.

They tell their supporters that they love things, all the while cracking down on them.
"We believe in smaller government, staying out of people's lives" "Let's ban gay marriage, let's get people for walking across the road in the 'wrong place'" "let's increase the size of government"

They've been doing this for so long I doubt anyone they're speaking to even notices it. They're used to "rights" being for them, not for others.

"Marriage is a right, just not for you.... "

When media is used to plan and organize assassinations, THAT part needs to be held accountable. It's really that simple. You have a right to bear arms, too. You just don't have a right to use them to assassinate people for their beliefs. What the **** is so hard to understand?

Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, political equality, the right to private property, and equality before the law.

LOL

From your link.......Miller said this.

“So let me explain a bit of what that means," Miller said. “The organized doxxing campaigns, the organized riots, the organized street violence, the organized campaigns of dehumanization, vilification, posting people's addresses, combining that with messaging designed to trigger, incite violence in the actual organized cells that carry out and facilitate the violence—it is a vast, domestic terror movement, and with God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, dismantle, and destroy these networks and make America safe again for the American people.”

Classical Liberalism is.

Not what we have before us today.

Free speech is anathema to republicans who call themselves conservatives but are fascist at best. I admit Vance surprised me. I read his book years ago and he seemed rational and intelligent not the sort of person who kowtows to a wannabee fascist. But power and privilege often corrupt.

Carl I don't mind opposing views, what I do detest is hypocrites like you. and the other Lefties if you could shut down speech from that you didn't like you would in aa heartbeat. Don't bother denying it. Between here and defending the truth I know you better than you do. If you thought you could get away with it you'd lock us all up.

Why Conservatives RINOS Hate Free Speech

Fixed it for you.

True conservatives absolutely value free speech. Partisan wingers with a (D) by their name and partisan wingers with an (R) by their name? Not so much. Evidently.

I love free speech, but it has limits. If express violent speech, and you have the power to put that speech into action, I'm of the mind that speech is dangerous and should be prosecuted. Having a sentiment is fine, acting negatively on it is not.
