And now for something not political. Why the hell are commercial aircraft seats so painful? I was able to drive five hours without difficulty. A five hour flight requires pain meds and stretching and trying to stand in the seat. Even rtegular buses are substantially better. Why are airline seats so painful?

Last time I flew from Chattanooga to Philly I had no leg room at all.

I asked the 2 guys sitting with me...if this was Fd up or is it me.

They both nodded thier heads in agreement at the same time.
Not only are the seats cramped for peasant class but the seats are a physical torture test. We drove five hours on a bus from germany to to Czechia and it was no issue. I take a two flight on an airplane and my hips, butt, and back are literally on fire.

You have to pay up for premium economy, 4 to 5 hours or less I'm okay with economy, but anything longer and it will always be premium economy. I took an 8 hour flight and the extra cost was around $1000, I decided not to pay up and regretted it. Luckily there were two late arrivals and they wanted to sit mother and daughter together and moved me to premium economy. I'll pay up from now on.

Many people have physical conditions that cause such discomfort. I too have felt cramped but with none of the above suffering. Once I was going on a trip to Alaska that was going involve lots of flying. To prepare I stopped drinking coffee and alcohol and went to bed early for two weeks before the trip. I never felt better and sailed through all of the long flights with ease as well as the hours-long meetings sitting on uncomfortable metal chairs. I highly recommend my method.

fly 1st or business class...

I usually will pay the extra hundred bucks to get the extra leg room seat but am okay with regular ones if I must. I don't find the seats particularly comfortable or uncomfortable. Maybe has to do with which airline you are flying or how old the padding in them is. I just hate it when someone super fat gets the center seat next to me and manspreads all over the place. I try to get first row of economy when I can since the bulkhead is now an occasionally pulled curtain instead of a wall.

take a cushion to sit on as your personal item if it is painful for you. Sounds like you may have some lower back/sciatica issues. Also see if you can get an 800mg motrin to pop just before your flight. I personally tend to find bus seats more uncomfortable than airplane seats as they tend to be narrower.

it's funny how very few ever talk about elbow room. I think there must have been a time when regular flying was like those "first class" seats. Probably the 1950s. Ah, that must have been a glorious time. No freaks of nature reading at the library and all the rest.

Most American backsides are too wide for normal seats.

About three years ago, I flew Spirit airlines for a 90-minute flight. I was already in bad shape. The seat became a torture device when we were delayed by another 90 minutes to de-ice the plane prior to takeoff. By the time we landed, I had trouble walking off the plane. This was also back during COVID and we were all wearing those stupid, useless masks!

Get the aisle or the window. The last flight I took I had the extra leg room 3 seat row to myself. I raised those armrests and was in hog heaven. My wife and I will sometimes book those taking up the window and the aisle and hoping no butthole comes in and buys the center seat. Works sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't.

Bring a cushion, perhaps?

I believe it is cheaper to fly from Phoenix to Denver today than it cost 50 years ago.

People didn't used to fly. Now, prices are very cheap when compared to other things.

How do they keep them cheap?

By putting a bell around your neck, a ring through your nose, and feeding you corn.

When I get on an aircraft, I always go "Moooooooooooooo".

Airplanes = Cattle Cars
