Russia would have gone through Ukraine like crap through a goose had it not been for the USA and NATO lending a trillion dollars worth of help to Ukraine.

But as to Russia paying a heavy price, get real. Who is going to make Russia "pay a heavy price?" The USA? China? The EU?
Russia is the largest country in the world and while fairly poor for their size, they do have nukes and military out the ass.

Russia will be lucky to pay any price at all (beyond the already current sanctions). That is just the way it is. If they get Russia to pull out of what is left of Ukraine and stop the killing, folks will be happy enough.

I don't think anyone thought that they would "polish them off" easily, although it did look grim in the first weeks of the war.

That said, the thing has ground down into a bloody stalemate, and you have to ask what either side is really hoping to accomplish at this point.

What should happen.

Russia keeps Donbas and Crimea.
Russia returns everything else.
They donate 100 Billion over X number of years for rebuilding.
Ukraine can't join NATO.
It can join the EU.
The UN should take responsibility for Ukraine's defense.

The Ukrainiian people had the peace option offered to them by Russia, but they decided to cooperate with the US plans of a proxy war instead.

Russia had no choice and still has no choice today. Have you no sympathy for your country's women and children who are becoming collateral damage in another US led war?
