Black community leaders in Fresno, Calif., are urging the Fresno Unified School District to re-evaluate the hiring of a white guy to teach three cultural studies courses at a brand-new middle school that will overwhelmingly serve minority students.

Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School — named after the city’s first black principal — will open in a few short weeks. It’s the first middle school in the immediate, poverty-ridden vicinity since 1979.

The protesters are unhappy because the school has chosen to hire Peter Beck, a person with white skin, over other, unidentified candidates, The Fresno Bee reports.

Beck will teach African-American studies, Latino studies and Southeast Asian studies.

“We’re just saying what the community wants,” said Rev. Karen Crozier, one of the activists. “We didn’t fight for a white male or female teacher to educate our babies.”

Crozier, who appears to be a professor at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary, also suggested that a white person cannot teach minority children in this instance because of racism.

No, it doesn't, but if you are white and the kids are black, they know racism that you do not.

That's not a big deal in math, but it is when teaching cultural studies and you aren't a member of said culture. I can teach Japanese Studies but I'm not Japanese so it won't be the same as if I was. Some of you are big enough pussies to teach Women's Studies but I'd prefer the one who did had an actual vagina.

While he may not have the same experience as a minority, he may have experiences WITH people of various backgrounds, more varied than just one, his own.

So, say they hire a nice, black for this position. He has gone to a black church and raised in a black community and that is precisely what he knows.

When a white educated scholar who has studied different cultures and has taken the opportunity to live in various countries to learn about these cultures will not be even given the opportunity to interview for the position. But the one who knows of just one culture, his own, will be possibly given the job because of his color.

What is wrong with that picture? Small minded people with small minded ideas are bigots, ya know. Now just what would that person teach, with his lack of knowledge and experience?

The answer is simple.

Since they're are three separate classes, African-American studies, Latino studies and Southeast Asian studies, they need three teachers.
A black teacher for black studies, a Latino for Latino studies, and an Asian for Asian studies.

This will make the activists happy, the kids happy, the teachers union REAL happy, and the tax payers, ummmm, not so much.
