If the people were smarter they'd stand up for themselves and demand Proportional Representation. Most people don't even know what it is, because they haven't been told by their overlords to want it.

People do realize how it works or I could not find essays on how it works.
Federal Government works like a computer works. Computers really are on and off switches. In effect a yes or a no. If you assume the public being elected with multitudes of switches,that makes it more difficult. Our founders set things up that resulted a yes or no form. What is wrong with that?

A good example of Government working for the people correctly is how it runs under Governor Ron DeSantis. Today he addressed home schoolers in a forum and he addressed the ways Government works in Florida and how it refused to hire many more Government workers and saves so much money and how efficient that government is it makes us ask, why don't all states run like his does? Some want more and more government workers that cost a fortune and want a government like Florida to fail. Perhaps by using proportional representation.
