I remember this well as a young Man, British Mercenaries in the Angolan Civil War, after a fair trial four of the ringleaders ended up in front of a firing squad the others in prison, some ex soldiers others deluded Walter Mitty types, the leader a lunatic Greek Cypriot who had served in the Parachute Regiment was a real psycho who even killed some of his own men, i read one motivation for the bastard going to Angola was to steal diamonds among the chaos of war, maybe the Russians could learn from this how to deal with Mercenaries.

As I recall it they were given "the chop" in the Comoros. I no longer remember the Greek's real name but he may have gone by the name of Bob Denard? He would stick the barrel of a shotgun into the mouth of one of his black subordinates every morning and pull the trigger just for the fun of it. Nasty b'stards they were. Yes, they did operate in Angola but their main joy was in Katanga. They even did some "chopping" in Rhodesia. I lived in Rhodesia in the mid-late 1970s and although I was never in contact with them I did meet a Hungarian there who claimed he ran with that pack of murderes.

>>> A single CORRECTION to my reply: Bob Denard was a French mercenary, not the Greek you mentioned. I still cannot remember the Greek's name but he was the one I described who used to blow the head off of one of his own men every morning ..... just for a laugh.

If you mean the one who was executed in Angola it was this psycho who was a Greek Cypriot.

Yes. Callan. I suppose he escaped the noose in the Comoros by some sort of trickery but others of his lot were not as fortunate. If memory serves me there was an American who had only just arrived who went up the gallows and hadn't even had time to fire a single shot.

Can't remember the American but no doubt there were some.

There used to a magazine called "Soldiers of Fortune" (or something to that effect) back in the early 1960s. Maybe it's still published, I don't know. I remember reading a few of them back in the day. There was always an advert on how to make contact with groups of mercenaries. The American I was thinking about did just that but I don't think he had any experience and he was young. Anyway, they sent him to the Comoros just as a crack down on the mercenaries bent on overthrowing the government was put into motion. The American never fired a shot but he got death just the same. The big guys, Denard and Callan knew how to work the system and were released.
