WhatsApp: Setting Avatar/Photo of Contacts

A couple of my contacts on WhatsApp show up as default avatars. Very boring and indistinguishable. Is it possible for me to change them only for my benefit? If so, how? I know how to change their name on my address list but it’s the photo/avatar I’d like to change.
