Predicting the death of political parties is academic at best. Too many variables, as the Democrats recently discovered with their monumental loss.

I think it's safe to say that if the Democratic Party continues on its current path, they will find themselves so marginalized as to be effectively self-castrated.

What red states were insolvent in 2008 and stopped paying at least some of their bills like IL and CA right now?
Who did not expect Obama to win in 2008 as Trump was not expected to win the last election?
Where were oh so many Republican senators brought in by Bush's 2004 win that could not survive in 2010?

The Democratic Party is more like a political science club whose goal is to appeal to enough special interests to win elections. As such they are willing to adopt any ideology, regardless of its long term consequences.
