What They Don't Want You To Know About Horse Carriage Rides

This is sick!! I had absolutely no idea. buttercup did you know about this?

Yes, and it's both heartbreaking and infuriating to me. It's understandable that you hadn't heard about it, because unless you're in animal advocacy / animal rights circles, it's not that known to the general public. So I'm really glad that The Dodo did a story on this, because it gets it out there to a more mainstream audience.

Those horses are treated like slaves, and then after years of abuse and neglect, they are sold off, and I don't know the exact numbers but I think a good portion of them end up being bought for slaughter.

There ARE some former carriage horses who get rescued and end up in an animal sanctuary, and thankfully are able to live out the last years of their life with the utmost love, care and respect.

The Gentle Barn is an excellent animal sanctuary that has rescued some of those horses....

(for some reason this won't play here, so you have to watch it on Instagram)

I never actually been on a carriage ride before but that's because they don't have any around where I live though. I've been on a wagon ride before though are all horses treated like this? I mean it's one thing to whip them a bit but this was excessive and the poor thing couldn't get up!! That's barbaric as he was literally whipped to death. 😢

I don't know about wagon rides, but the unfortunate reality that no one wants to hear (unpopular opinion incoming) is that any time an animal is a commodity, they're not going to be treated the way they should be treated. Especially in industries were time is money and things move fast, those animals are treated in the most cruel, diabolical ways. Why, because they're not viewed as living beings but as mere objects / a way to make money.

And yeah, that particular story really woke a lot of people up. I've heard that at least 70% of New Yorkers want a ban on horse-drawn carriages, because of the obvious abuse, but so far it hasn't happened.

I used to love going horseback riding and if I ever got a horse I wouldn't think of it as owning it. I would think of it as just borrowing it for a little while. 😊

You know I sure hope the Amish treat their horses properly but I'm guessing that being people of faith that they do.
