What mementos from you past to you keep?

Yep I've been through those stations many times as well. I have a lot of great memories from those days, too bad the Cartels have taken over.
The only time I ever had anything that resembled a problem was of my own making. We were a family of six and we drove over to Juarez one weekend in the early sixties. When returning CBP always asks everyone in the car to state their nationality. Being 8 or 9 and a natural wise ass that was born outside the US, when my turn came, I spouted very loudly "JAPANESE." To which the agent said "pull over there" You didn't have to carry a passport in those days and it took about an hour of explaining our situation to be released. LOL, I got my hide tanned for that one and I still hear about it on occasion from my siblings.

You can have the guajolotes. I have flocks of them that wander across my yard -- sometimes thirty or more. Vermin that tear up my yard.

I have hunted wild turkeys often and to a point I even shot a banded one with a nice beard once.
The Rio's we were hunting down there were a little harder to call in, and spooked pretty easy, but they saw "pressure" in their territory from man and beast, so that might have made a difference as well.

It was funny at one point when we were calling them through tall grass/brush, and you would see them stick their head up for a few seconds well out of range, and look around before ducking back down and coming closer.

I got lucky during that hunt when the guide called in two toms that broke the grass line close enough, then got a good look at each other and started fighting, and when they start fighting, they don't give a crap about anything else. I shot one as my limit, and the other one kept kicking his ass after he was dead.

I never had a problem at the border but had a real scare in Guadalajara. I was partying with my friend and some Puerto Rican students he knew at a disco one night. We left really late and cops were waiting outside the parking lot. We drove about 100 feet down the road and got pulled over. They pulled the driver out of the car and one of the Puerto Rican girls I was sitting by said "they don't like Puerto Ricans this could be a problem." Juan came back and said "hey I'm not kidding they want fifty dollars or they are taking us to jail! Fortunately I had it on me so I happily gave it him and they let us go.

They are not indigenous to this area--someone introduced them about 100 years ago and they are everywhere around here. LOL, It isn't like the rest of the country where you have to hunt them---they walk down city streets in Spokane and spring and fall hatches in the woods, you find them everywhere.

I've heard multiple friends and others relate similar happenings and my dad used give the cops on the street a few coins to keep close watch on our car when we visited, but I've never had any problem at all with anyone in Mexico.

Oh for sure, the Mexican people (and Puerto Ricans) I met down there were all the nicest people. Mi casa es su casa is not just a phrase, they mean it.
