Of all the issues that face our country, what issue do you believe is the greatest divider of this country?

The FACT that the Republican Party is 90% white and based in the Deep South is probably the source of the biggest division. This has allowed all the nuts and extreme positions to become concentrated in one political party.

Let him die.

Every man for himself.

American helping American is socialism.

It was after the last hurricane that Cantor, the guy who will probably replace John Boehner wanted to withhold disaster relief. This is the Republican Party. No wonder they shit all over Katrina victims. They were already telling us something.

Then there is the self destruction of the future. Education in Red States is bad enough, but slashing funding for education will simply ensure we will become a banana republic.

They are fixated on getting the black guy out of the WHITE House. When your reasons are as lame as "he wants everyone to have health care" or "he's a fascist Marxist, boy-king Kenyan Mau Mau" then it's clear it's about race and nothing else.

When you point these things out, they scream "LIAR!", but we all sit in front of the Internet. We can go listen to their political candidates say these things right out loud and in public.

"Corporations are people my friend".

"Gays can be in the military but children can't pray in school".

Is there a single Republican candidate that hasn't been connected to racism, homophobia, or some other category of ignorant hate?

And their policies are a joke. Really bad jokes, but still jokes.

The great divide?

It's philosophical.

"What is the POINT of government?"

Those leaning right believe it is to defend individual rights (as they define that term).

Those leaning left think it is to provide the PEOPLE with a functional society (as THEY define that term).

Of course in my opinion both philosophies are right but both philosophies have to accept the fact that sometimes those philosophies are in conflict with each other.

OFTEN the rights of the individual must be superceded by the rights of the commonweal.

Pretty much every law in the land, laws that both right and left can agree on completely are STILL violating the rights of the individuals.

Such is life.

Complete individualistic FREEDOM isn't possible in society.

If only the republican party was truely interested in individuals rights

I understand your objection to that, TM because I do NOT think the RNC really does care about rights of CITIZENS.

But the non-leadership partisans of the GOP DO BELEIVE that the GOP is defending citizens rights.

You and i might think they're mislead, confused, clueless or whatever, but they are sincere, even if misinformed.

Don't confuse the trolls claiming to be conservatives on THIS board with the real nature of most cons.

The trolls here post inflammatory posts because your reactions to their childish crap amuse them.

The biggest difference in people in America today is those who want to excel, work and earn a good living, and those who want to LIVE OFF those who want to excel, work and earn a good living. The first are called republicans, and the later democrats, and it's getting worse all the time. I predict that at some point we'll see Civil War II over these differences, which should be over quite quickly if the gun hating left is true to their word and none of them own any firearms.

Our main differences is (sic) that some of us use good grammar and at least do lip service to having a spell checker, and some of us do not!

Ya know- they have drugs to treat what ails you. ;)

I believe the greatest divider is that the government no longer serves to benefit all citizens equally, but has become the benevolent jokester, picking and choosing whom deserves to benefit from the public kitty. When people have learned that if they become worthless enough that it pays, they become worthless, and those who are footing the bills resent the hell out of it.

True, however there is a bit more to the dichotomy. While often the rights of the individual must be overruled by the government, many Progressives view this as a situation where the government is the foundation of rights subject to the whims of the rulers while many social conservatives on the left view this as the purview of the government subject to the laws as they interpret them.

In many cases ideas are good and implementations are disastrous (see Obamacare, Medicare Part D, Sarbanes-Oxley, McCain-Feingold, The Patriot Act, etc.).

You may be correct that the RNC does not care about the rights of citizens. However I don't think the DNC or the current Administration does either. Of course I didn't think the last Administration did, nor the one before that...
