What is in a name?

I started studying the meanings of the names of the charactors in the Bible a few years back to find more understanding in the written words.

I posted a similar post at another forum when Barak Obama was elected president. I thought I would share the same with the believers here at USMB.




Barak = "lightning" or "lightning flash"
1) son of Abinoam of Kedesh who, incited by Deborah, a prophetess of Ephraim, delivered the Israelites from the yoke of Jabin by routing the Canaanites in the plain of Jezreel

Kedesh = "holy place"
1) a city in the extreme south of Judah
a) same as 'Kadesh' and 'Kadesh-barnea'
2) a city of Issachar allotted to the Gershonite Levites
3) a fortified Canaanite city allotted to Naphtali
4) a city of refuge in Naphtali

Israel = "God prevails"
1) the second name for Jacob given to him by God after his wrestling with the angel at Peniel
2) the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob
a) the name of the nation until the death of Solomon and the split
b) the name used and given to the northern kingdom consisting of the 10 tribes under Jeroboam; the southern kingdom was known as Judah
c) the name of the nation after the return from exile

Naphtali = "wrestling"

Zebulun = "exalted"

On a related not, to hijack RodISHI's thread: does anyone here know hebrew enough to construct a name out of the desired phrase?
