What if the fundamental structure of reality isn’t matter or energy, but recursion itself? Not merely repeating patterns in a superficial sense, but deep, self referential loops that underpin everything we perceive: space, time, life, and consciousness.
At its simplest, recursion is the feedback of output into input. Scale this principle to a cosmic level, and it can generate nested layers of complexity; from atomic interactions to galactic dynamics, from neural activity to thought processes. Each layer feeds into the next, much like the “turtles all the way down” metaphor, where each support depends on the next, and the structure has no origin or end. The complexity we observe might not be emergent from simpler units, but rather an intrinsic property of recursive organization itself.
Consciousness could be understood as recursion observing itself. Each act of awareness, every thought and perception, is a self referential loop embedded within larger loops. Memory, reflection, and imagination, all local instantiations of recursion, nested within broader processes that encompass entire systems and even the universe as a whole.
In this framework, the individual “I” is not a separate entity but a node in a network of recursive observation, participating in and amplifying the larger process. This perspective naturally implies non-separation. The observer and the observed are not distinct but integral threads within a unified recursive fabric.
Extending this idea further, God might be conceived as the sum total of all recursion. The aggregate of every feedback loop, every reflection, every self-observing process. Not a separate entity with intentionality, but the entirety of recursive structure itself. The universe modeling and observing itself across scales. Each conscious being both a participant in and an expression of this totality, meaning every action, perception, and thought contributes to the self-reflective process.
Even physical laws may be recursive rules. Stable, self-consistent patterns that allow the universe to sustain itself and maintain its capacity for self-reflection. Complexity, life, and consciousness could be necessary consequences of these deep recursive structures, rather than contingent anomalies. In this way, reality, consciousness, and divinity are inseparable, mutually constitutive aspects of a single recursive process. A universe perpetually observing, modeling, and folding back upon itself.
