Professional gamblers have been sounding the alarm about an element of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that passed in the Senate earlier this week, saying it would effectively raise their taxes, potentially by an enormous amount.

The specific language that has thrown gamblers, particularly in the poker community on social media, into a sense of panic was that deductions “shall be equal to 90% of the amount of such losses during such taxable year, and (B) shall be allowed only to the extent of the gains from such transactions during such taxable year.”

Maria Konnikova, who plays poker and writes books about it, also believes the bill would hurt her earnings.

“This is absolutely horrific if you’re a professional poker player—or even someone like me, who straddles the journalism and poker worlds. It’s basically a huge in-built fee on choosing to engage in any form of gambling (poker isn’t gambling—it’s a game of skill—but I won’t get into that here! for the bill’s purposes, we’re lumping all gambling-adjacent activities together),” she told FOS.

“Imagine I have $100,000 in winnings in a year from poker and I played $200,000-worth of tournaments, for a net win of $0. In past years, I’d have zero poker income—no taxes, because I didn’t actually make a cent. Under this bill, my losses are capped at 90%. So, I can only report $90,000 in losses—and I have to pay taxes on a phantom $10,000 that I don’t actually have! I’m being charged a penalty for choosing to play to begin with. This is absolutely bonkers. For someone like me, it means I effectively have to use my earnings as a writer to subsidize playing poker. Instead of an income stream, poker becomes a liability. If the purpose of this bill is to kill poker and stop people from playing, mission accomplished. The provision hurts you whether you have a winning year or a losing year—and the poker ecosystem is unlikely to survive the change.”

Who
wrote this piece of trash legislation into the Bill? Looks like because of the real conservative Thomas Massey it won’t pass.

As I do not live in the USA full-time, this does not really affect me. But it could destroy thousands of jobs in the poker and gaming industry. With the so-called trickle down effect.

Gotta love people who blindly support the bill

“Well don’t you know that gambling destroys families?”

Misleading claim Problem, gambler account for under one people who have gambled in other words, played a slot machine or gone to a casino at some point in their life

Well gambling is evil

By that logic, so is everything associated with capitalism. Far far far less less are ruined by gambling. Far more people almost 50% or more of people who open up a restaurant lose everything and many have to declare bankruptcy. Astronomically more amount of people lose all of their money, investing in companies, starting a company. There’s way more evil by this logic and our entire capitalistic system for example, restaurants competing with each other stores competing with each other. There’s always gonna be a loser.

But at least with casinos , sports betting and poker etc , the amount of people who get crushed is astronomically low compared to the restaurant or business industry,

Do gambling losses include entry fees?

America has destroyed itself and effectively the West, by allowing China into the WTO and supporting their communism.

Decades after many good men lost their lives and were imprisoned for helping the West defeat Russias communism you embraced it thanks to Clinton and others.

Now everyone pays a price.

Seems reasonable that gamblers get a tax hike while hard working food service workers don't pay tax on tips and seniors get a tax break on Social Security.

No it doesnt. Thousands of jobs will be destroyed, including Poker dealers casino workers. Plus, there is much more evil in the restaurant and business industry compared to the gambling industry. Just read the thread my friend. Before having a knee-jerk reaction to it.

This whole thing is a big problem for professional betters . Most especially Poker tournament players. But also sports betters . Not so much cash game poker players.

It could also potentially affect thousands of casino workers who might lose their job. We will see what happens.

To put the language straight forward. If you have $100,000 worth of buy ins.

hows that related to the gambling provision of the bill.

You have to nickel and dime every citizen now, doing what your Founders did NOT want you to do, thanks to excessive debt. Much of this debt, designed to maintain basic obligations and having to pay interest on this debt.

You went from 40% of the worlds economic activity to 23%. All thanks to China. This broadening of nickel and diming of citizens will continue as will tariffs (somewhat more understanding after 80 years of your Marshalls Plan).

Ok with respect what does this have to do with the gambling provision in the Bill? I don’t see any relation.

You’re talking about America’s debt problem. Different topic.

What do you think taxing gamblers does? It adds revenue to the Treasury Department.

Seems there is a lot things in the bill that few have any idea how they got there.
But that is the way of the Swamp.

Pretty much all legislation is like this.

For example, Nancy Pelosi famously said about Obamacare, you must pass it to find out what is in it.

Is that criminal? Sure, but crime is legal in the Swamp.

Recall, Democrats were hammered over that.

Ah but other industries are not seeing a tax hike.

There is far more money in the restaurant and business industry in America. Where there is astronomically more people losing everything. As the numbers have already shown.

Imagine a 10% tax hike for restaurant and business owners. And how people would react to it.

Does anyone here know who added the gambling provision into the big beautiful Bill. I wonder if it’s one of those evangelical people who thinks gambling is evil, but are fine with capitalism. If it is, they are big-time hypocrites. Because again the numbers simply show us that way more people go broke due to the restaurant and business industry. Really that’s just a part of capitalism in general Which creates a system of competition. It has its fault but it’s probably the best system around for now.

You are confusing communism vs capitalism with a republic vs dictatorship.
Historically all the evil feudal monarchs and dictators are capitalists.
All the true republics always support communism.
Public schools, public post offices, public firemen, public transportation, etc., is all communism.

I find is incredibly humorous that people would find a problem with communism in Russia, since clearly the Russian revolution was a vast improvement over the dictatorship of the Tzar.
The problem with Russia has nothing to do with communism, but the fact their elections are fairly rigged.

What idiot wrote the “gambling“ provision into the big beautiful Bill?

Likely an idiot elected to serve in Washington.

And if you are a poker player professional gambler on SNAP benefits, you need charged for all of that terrible cola you probably drank too.
