Purely as a guess, here's my read:

Trump was into chasing teen tail with Epstein. But over the years, especially as he eyed the Presidency, he realized he needed to extract himself from that sordid mess. Now it's just a big embarrassment he doesn't want to deal with, even if he had no criminal involvement.

That's my generous take.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Trump was one of Epstein's first clients, and being blackmailed with vids of him diddling minors.
