What do the icons to the left of the topics mean?

I just posted a new topic under current events, and the icon to the left of my topic says "old." Why is that? I just posted it, it's a new topic, shouldn't the icon say "new"?

Oh, I see it did the same thing for this topic. I must not be understanding what those icons mean. You would think "new" would mean "new" and "old" would mean "old." Call me crazy, I guess.

Because it's my thread it will always say "old" to me?

It probably says old now that you're back and you've posted

Maybe there is a post that you haven't read? It would be "new" to you.
