Yes you are correct technically. Not akin to the Czechoslovakia or East Germany, but yes indeed they had allegiances.

Though not in the same manner, they essentially accepted terms of neutrality during the Cold War (similar to others) and Russias boot was unofficially on their necks.

There is even a term for it if I recall, "Finlandization.

I didn't live through it obviously, but I can assure you, Russia had great influence though not officially as under their terms via the Warsaw Pact. Sweden was in the same boat I guess.
