He stepped down because of the GOP. They were embarrassed big time in the state by Eric Porterfield. He said that if he had gay children he would throw them in the river and see if they could swim. He didn't resign.

He was crushed the next election. Finished fifth in a five man field. The GOP didn't want this to be the headlines with the election coming up so you can bet they insisted he resign. If the OP wants to bitch he needs to bitch at the GOP.
