Coal Miners who voted for Donald Trump to keep West Virginia’s mines humming applaud the president’s executive orders allowing power plants to burn more coal.
But the Trump administration has also cut programs that keep miners safe, shutting down the country’s only program tracking an epidemic of black-lung disease and silicosis, and firing technicians who give miners chest X-rays. It has also signaled a scaling back of at least 35 offices at the agency that inspects mines.
Unfortunately this is West Virginia where among all 50 states, West Virginia has the highest percentage of people living in counties where government aid is a significant share of personal income, according to think tank Economic Innovation Group. Nearly 27% of West Virginia residents, for instance, were Social Security beneficiaries in 2023, the highest share among states, according to federal data.
Also unfortunately for these coal miners Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired scientists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health that helped coal miners.
***********************************
I guess the message to coal miners from Trump is “I appreciate your giving your lives for coal, but damnit don’t come asking the government handouts after you get sick or ask that your mines be safe.”
Coal as an energy source is headed out. Hillary was right. She was looking to future. Like all things Trump, he only looks back. Too bad West Virginians can’t see that.
