They actually had a black character in the last Star Wars trilogy that could've been the main character of a future Star Wars movie. John Boyega, who played Finn, was a popular character who was sidelined by Disney. It didn't help that when Disney did the poster for The Force Awakens, he was prominently shown in the poster. When they did the same poster for the China market, they intentionally reduced his profile to make him look like a minor character. I'm not sure that he would return if they wanted him to come back.
